Looking for some SEO Advice/Training

So I have my own brand new forum that I have recently opened and am now starting to think of SEO'ing and sorting out. My budget is very modest (Im only a student, no job, taking a year away from uni to get myself sorted before heading back for finals next September) so I can't really afford a WSO SEO plan at the moment - unless I could pay for installments.

Ive been looking around the internet and SEO explanations, definitions, how it works etc - but for the life of me I cannot get into it, I just dont understand half of it, I dont understand where to even begin. Its baffling it really is.

Im wondering if any very kind member would be interested in coming and having a chat with me via email or skype and being kind enough to help me out - perhaps not for free (I can pay a small amount).

I dont want to sound like im begging, but i'd be lying if I wasn't desperate.

When you say you have a "brand new forum" do you mean you created a forum?

And now you want to know how to promote that forum? Hoping to apply SEO principles to its pages?

My advice would be to learn some basics of SEO from excellent sticky threads here. Only then help from experts would be helpful to you. SEO is actually pretty easy when you are starting out. It only gets complicated when you want to do sophisticated things and that is where professional help can come handy.

Hello again - thanks for all the replies.
Okay I have just created a forum, a sports forum with sections for most worldwide sports. It also has general chat forums, trading forums and I am thinking of potentially gaining an advertising/online marketing section in the near future.

At the moment, I have 5 different twitter accounts for the forum, which have a combined of around 800 followers. I am keeping up with all sports stories, its impossible to follow every live story for every single sport in the world though. I have got most stories for English Football, Cricket and Tennis, some MLB links and more.

My main issue seems to be the lack of guests converting into members. I get 50 guests online at a time when I send tweets out, yet my conversion rates are terrible, below 0.5% I'd imagine. I have tried controversial polls, questions that need answering or intriguing topic points, but again its very hard to flog a new product, when their are millions of other forums miles ahead of mine.

The main SEO needing to be done, is HTML, backlinks, optimizing homepages etc - Keyword research, ranking and just a general traffic increase.

By the way I've had 1 or 2 PM's - I can't PM until I have 50 posts, so please leave a skype invitation or name or a contact email. Thanks. The forum is in my sig by the way.

Maybe it's too broad of a topic area just now. I think you should hone it in. Pick one sport or pick one topic to cover the sports (Daily News and Opinions / or funny pictures) and then build up adding new sports and areas. Unless you take somebody on to help this will be a lot of work.

Here is some free advice... Unless you have a giant budget, I would probably skip the SEO for a site like this. You are competing against the likes of ESPN, CBS Sportsline, Fox Sports, and others I would presume. You are never going to beat them. Don't let any clowns around here take your money telling you they can rank you against those big boys for a couple of bucks.

I would instead look towards social media and forum marketing to get the word out about your site. Build up a community and go from there. Maybe some PPC advertising. SEO is probably going to be a waste of money, and that is coming from an SEO.

Quite agree with Mike, and it looks like you're already looking towards SM:

No sure why you need five account anyway - it sounds like an unnatural twitter strategy. Also build some FB presence - your audience is there rather than on linkedin for example. Not sure about Google plus - but it won't hurt to try how it works for you.

Also make sure to be truly engaged into discussions on your forum yourself. Great examples to follow are ARVolund with trafficplanet and Chrishirst with seo forum at tycoontalk freelancer (also seen the guy on a number of other boards, he's hilarious).

Thanks for the advice guys. I've actually managed to find myself an SEO man that 50% agrees with what you have said, my keywords are going to be 'Sports Forum' which is apparently going to take 3-5 months to rank on google page. I am going for some other keywords also so lets hope they can help! I've written a list of over 250 forums down with URL links that I am going to sign up to and get the word spread around!

I have been lucky enough to find a person that's willing to help me SEO and advertise for free, or in return for a promotion of their business! Which works absolutely fine for me.

If anyone feels like they have more advice or think they can help me then please - feel free to PM me with a skype name or email address.

'Sports Forum' only gets 1900 searches a month globally. Now, you can probably take out 400-500 of those searches as people who do not speak English, and you are looking at something like 1400-1500 searches a month at best.

With that few searches, unless you are #1, you really are not going to see much traffic. At #10, you might get 50 visits/month, but probably not even that many.

You will probably have more success pooling a list of 50-100 keywords more specific than 'sports forum' and targeting those. To be honest, for a project like this, I probably wouldn't be working with anything less than a keyword list of 100 keywords.

Be careful about how you do this. Just posting messages about your new forum on other people's forums makes you look like a real dick. A signature link and actual true participation in the forum, fine. Just messages like "Hey, take a look at my new forum," will probably get deleted quickly, and if I was the owner of the forum I would ban you from ever coming back.

Now there are opportunities though. I ran a site a long time ago with a group of guys. Best I can describe it is it was something like Maxim magazine online. It had a forum with a sports section. There was a very popular sports forum I used to participate at pretty regularly. A group of guys there wanted to start a weekly NFL Football Pick'em league, but the forum structure made it impossible to do there. I offered to host it on our site instead. That brought some good traffic, members, and got things started pretty well.

One other piece of advice, I probably wouldn't have just a signature link to your sports forum at these forums with something like 'Visit my new sports forum'. They are already in a sports forum. Why do they want to go to another one? So find something that will peak their interest. Right now the NFL season is coming up. The only reason the NFL is so popular is because of fantasy football. Maybe make a post in your forum about top fantasy sleeper picks. Then in your signature link to that post with something like 'Check out my top fantasy football sleepers for 2012'.

Well, good luck with that. Promoting an SEO business in a sports forum is a waste of time. Sounds like they are brand new. I never met a good SEO willing to work for free. Hopefully, they do a good job for you.

Speaking of that, you mentioned something in an earlier post about having an Internet Marketing section on your forum? Horrible idea. Just get rid of that now. Completely out of place and makes no sense whatsoever.

Sorry probably a poor choice of words. Forums are their own breed. Regardless of SEO, you gotta be in it for the long haul. (promoting, moderating etc)

Unless of course, you've already built a list of like minded people.
