XML Sitemap is designed for search engines while HTML is for humans though html sitemap is seldom use by users when browsing the site.

According to me sitemap HTML is for user and sitemap XML is for search engine. from search engine point of view both are useful but search engine will crawl XML sitemap faster than HTML so XML will work better for search engine.

I use both. My XML sitemap isn't linked anywhere except webmaster tools. My HTML sitemap is purely for human accessibility reasons.

HTML sitemaps to distribute links juice + help humans. XML sitemaps to increase indexed pages (speed) in search engines.

I must go with the XML Sitemap because in search engine point of view, XML is the best Sitemap while HTML Sitemap is best for the user point of view.
