Is google really important at all?

When I first started Internet Marketing the only thing on my mind was getting to the first page of google. Thats where the money is I thought, If I can just get there I'll be good. Now fast forward today and I realize that's not the case. I have sites on Google's first page that have done poorly, and one's that aren't that do jsut fine.

I've come to believe that getting organic traffic from google isn't all that important. Sure it's nice, but its through my other marketing efforts and linking where I see the most traffic coming from. My articles, videos, and links are what seem to bring in the majority of my traffic, not google.

As well as being more, I also find it much more stable. A simple algorithm change won't upset my entire empire. Sure youtube could remove my videos, or a blog could remove my links, but these horror stories are much less common than big G pulling the plug. I guess it all goes back to not "putting your eggs in one basket".

Does anyone else feel that google , in the grand scheme of marketing, isn't really all that important?

I realize this is probably niche dependant to some degree. The more saturated your niche the less you can rely on getting good rankings and organic traffic, and the choice of what I choose to market in might effect the way I feel about organic traffic. Still, overall I feel ranking on google, and the organic traffic that follows, should be only a part of an overall marketing plan, and a small one at that.

Thoughts?

SEO really isn't my thing and I am moving away from PPC too so at the moment google is not my top priority at all.

There are many more marketing methods than google.

No, SEO definitely isn't your only option.

Pay Per Click is a huge way to get traffic. The way I see it, Google realizes they aren't all that important and they're scared because of it.

Social Networking is the wave of the future, and Google's basically trying to cheat off Facebook's (and Twitter's) homework.!!

It's good you realize Google isn't the end all be all.

A lot of people see google as the almighty ruler of the internet, which just isn't true. They wish that were true, but other methods are growing rapidly. Like footbag_man said, it's just not a lot of people's priority.

Well said, I should actually take advantage of PPC myself! LOL.

Google will remain important as long as they are as dominant as they currently are . Things change all the time in the world so there is likely to be a challenger some time in the future . Yahoo and Bing at the moment are just not it.

So why do I say Google is still important . Well , many buyers come from organic search . Ignore that and you are ignoring a big slice of the market . Yes it is more tough now getting that top 3 ranking , but if you there and have a decent trafficked keyword , than you can make a decent amount from adsense alone.

I think it depends on how you are trying to earn money with your sites. For example, most of my revenue come from adsense so having free organic traffic is everything; however, if you are trying to sell a product articles, videos, and links as you mentioned because the customer is most likely looking for info on the product and more likely to follow links if they don't find what they are looking for.

Some people rely on Google marketing almost completely, and it seems to work well for them. So yes, I think it can work depending on the niche. If you're working in attraction marketing of any kind, for example, you need your site to be at the top when a person searches your name or your recognizable brand.

That being said, I agree with you that ranking doesn't HAVE to be a huge necessity if you use other great marketing methods like list building with paid traffic, social networking, and blog commenting.

I dont like google, I did seo honestly and was trying to give the people what they wanted and not try and game google and I got slapped big time. I had 100% original content and all the junk. What was worse, I was just about to contact businesses who wanted to rent the site from me, and BAM the site was in on page 1423525somethingsomthing. Not worth the time IMO. Now im moving towards list building and im really enjoy it, its a bit more stress free.

I haven't used Google in years, and my business is far more successful than when I use to rely solely on Google.

SEO to me is not a very stable or reliable way to build a business, and stability and predictability is very important to me.

I wouldn't build a house on quick sand and I wouldn't build a business that relied on SEO

I think many people are brainwashed into a brand, so much so they they don't even bother to explore other viable avenues.

    • Although most people use Google to find products, services, and information, this is not your only option. You may also use social media and pay per click advertising to drive targeted traffic to your site and promote your business.

Don't ever set out to built a business purely based on ranking terms on Google. Never rely on a single source of traffic for anything.

PS - You should also consider retargeting! Web traffic should never be squandered.

I will be the first to admit at this moment in time, Google is very important to me but I am at the very easily stages of learning IM. Now do I plan on maintaining this solo relationship with Google, nope. I plan on learning from this and then venturing off to other aspects of IM such as CPA probably in the next few months.

Google organic ranking is too much important for anyone, as you can get tons of traffic and leads through it. PPC is a good alternative but you need to spend much money whenever you required traffic and leads.
