Revamp of site change of sitemap and inclusion of permalinks

I had an old site recently and it was in need of some tweaking. So I had the onpage work done, I changed the site structure to permalinks and built a few fresh backlinks. The site vanished from the serps for its chosen keywords in actual fact its inner pages were ranking on like page 10 but not the homepage. The site was still indexed.
Now ive noticed it on page 11 whilst previously it was on the bottom of page2.
Is this normal? Is the site being re evaluated so to speak?
