Redirect on expired domain

Hi there,

I found some related post on the forum but I'm still not sure about this.

I did found some nice old domains with links, page authority etc.
Open Site Explorer however is giving the following line when I check the domain:
"Oh Hey! It looks like that URL redirects to www3.xxxxxxxxx.net/ Would you like to see data for that URL instead?"
(of course the x's are some letters)
Does this mean the domain is useless for backlinking when I purchase it? Or can I somehow remove the redirect after purchasing the domain?

    Yes you can do whatever you want with the domain - change the name servers, remove the redirect, change the database, install Wordpress, whatever.
