One simple way for YOU to control your meta description

Some say SEO is dead. Many of us think otherwise - fortunately. If you are a believer and - like me - struggle with the meta description (not with making it, with the SE's picking it) - look here.

I have always paid close attention to my meta description for any page/post. I look at it as the window to the store. If I don't like what I see, well I won't go in - no matter how flashy the shop sigh is!

It is a constant annoyance that no matter what plugin/theme I use (I'm a WP person), and no matter how I push my carefully set meta descriptions, the SE's choose what they feel like, at random, from all over my page/post, including image alt tags.

One day - magic ...... Thanks to Ana Hoffman @ TGC - Trafficgenerationcafe

[go there- this is good stuff!!]
[not enough posts to offer link but getting there ]

This little trick lets you control your meta descriptions in the SEs:

1. Compose your page / post
2. Write your meta
3. Take your meta description and copy this so that it becomes your very first paragraph - like a page/post snippet.
4. The SE's will pick this up - at least they do for me

Now it's best - from a flow point of view - that you make the H1 title flow into your meta to make it one paragraph like but this is not always easy/possible (at least not for me) so 1-4 above is fine, and it does not look crappy to the reader!

Have fun!

I have always found that using your KWs in your description works.

If someone was searching for you using "cat food" and your description mentioned the phrase "cat food" then Google will choose to us it. If however you didn't, but your page mentioned the phrase, Google will use a snippet from your page where the KW is mentioned.

Thanks Craig11 but I see the challenge even when using the KW in the meta. SE's still pick at random - at times, not always but at times. One page I have been struggling with I just applied above 2 days and go and today, wupti, meta is exactly what I want.

Although without doing official research I can be unsure, but I don't think it would be at random. The search engines are quite sophisticated now and it would not make any sense for them to just guess.

Rereading what you wrote, it would make more sense to write your KWs in your first paragraph (or how you would like your Meta Description to be) and leave your Meta tag empty.

Maybe it's down to using your KW once in your Meta and twice near each other on the page and the SEs prefer the on-page.

Now If you want to target 5 relevant keyword phrases on a single page, do this:
    1. Remove the meta description tag.
    2. Add the usual <h1> tag with the main keyword for the page.
    3. Add 5 (whatever number makes sense for your page) <h2> tags with relevant search phrases to the <h1> tag.
    4. Mention a variation of the <h2> keyword phrase in the first paragraph of each matching <h2>.

Now instead of a single static SERP Description, you'll have 5 laser targeted variations of the original Meta Description text.

    Example:

    Keywords:
    • Cheap Auto Insurance
    • Free Automobile Insurance Quotes Online
    • Auto Insurance Quotes
    • Automobile Insurance Ratings
    • High Risk Auto Insurance Companies
    • Auto Insurance Companies

If you setup the page correctly, also add the exact keywords as on-page jump-links & add relevant text surrounding the target keyword, you should see a jump-link & the relevant SERP description in the SERPs when searching for your keyword/page, customized to each of the 5 <h2> tag keywords (all on a single page).

Build relevant internal/external links to the page.

I've spent the last 59 months building 412 MFA sites. Each site averages 8 cents per day...I said average, some make up to 17 cents per day, PASSIVE INCOME! This income allows me to live comfortably and buy ANY flavor Jolly Rancher or Skittles I desire. Don't give in to fear, it CAN be done!

where do you click to trigger the jumps, or you don't, it's just for the meta description?

are u saying that google will display the most relevant jump link and surrounding text depending on what keyword was searched for?

Jump-links at the top of the same page, just like a Wikipedia article page.

Just like anything else in SEO, nothing is guaranteed, still you can do the SEO to usually get Google SERPs to do certain things, example, show jump-links & dynamic SERP descriptions based on the keyword being searched for by traffic.

    Hello all,

Nice and informative discussion on Meta and all that. Now a days Google not only consider meta description, but also check the same keyword in Meta. And i agree with "lucasbowen" that if your description became your site content first paragraph, than it can generate some good result.

Yukon also share some good thought, and its really helpful. Basically i want to say that if your targeted keyword is in description and in content than your SERP will be good.

Ad description should be unique to each page so if you get description from the first paragraph then it is really good decision, however, there are many WP plugins which do this task automatically.
