Don't you think that SEO is like a investment?

Hello,

I just talked with one of my friends who have done IM for about year. He averages ~$5000 from just ONE site which is in pretty competiitve niche. Now the funny thing is that he works his ass off in some random cafeteria, simple 8-5 job, but he has loads of money.

I asked him why he still works at this stupid cafeteria when he averages $5000 from just one site? And his answer was pretty suprising for me, he gets $900 from that cafeteria per/month and this $900 is for monthly link rentals to this specific site.

So basically all his salary goes to rink rental and he is says that is like the investment for his website. What you think about it?

    Seems a little weird to me.

    Why don't he just rinse and repeat the process again and scale it up so it pays for itself?

    I would say that he is correct. The links he buys for ranking is basically a marketing cost and that is investing into the company. As long as he is getting a $5000 return on the $900 spent, and he is happy with those margins then more power to him. Probably he knows how it works as far as rankings, here today - gone tomorrow, so it pays to be cautious and not hang up the offline gig.

    Lol guess he makes $5k/month with that site. Any way, if he would just pay the $900 from his profit he would still have $4100 left, it's just what his preferences are I guess.

      I thought the same, but he said that he only spends 6-7 hours per week on this website and he would go crazy if he had to sit home doing nothing. He is really "active" person.

    The SEO isnt the investment, his site is his investment. Like any other investment it must be maintained or it will lose its value and returns will fall. SEO is the maintaince necessary to keep his site in its postion. Because he is in a competitive niche the returns will be higher and so will the costs of keep it there!

    I think he is not too sure of himself.

    Otherwise, he should rinse and repeat his steps to increase his income online and then resign and face it squarely.

    Many people have to make money online for years before resigning from their day job mainly because they are not sure of themselves.
