Have a question in regards to H1 & H2 for wordpress. First, should your H1 be the title of your post? Second, whether your title is the H1 or H2, should your first header in the body include the main keyword your trying to rank for or supporting keywords instead? Which is better for ranking purposes?

    Hi,

In most themes, the post title is automatically set in H1, therefore if you pay attention to crafting good titles, your work there is done. Use H2 for subheads throughout the rest of the content.

Hi - To optimize my posts I always ensure that The H1 and H2 have my keywords included in it and for good measure I also have a H3.

I use a plugin called SEOpressor that assists me with doing this, and makes it easier to optimize all my posts.

    Hope this helps

    Regards

Makes sense. Thank you for the tips. I was pretty sure my title was my H1 but was unclear if I should include my main keyword in my H2 or just some supporting keywords.

On your individual posts pages, your post title should be H1.

Every wordpress theme is different. Some will have the post titles have H1 as default, and some will even have them as H3.

    ----

On your homepage, it is better to leave post titles as H3 or H2.

You don't want the default for post titles as H1 on the homepage because you don't want a bunch of H1 tags on a page. Only 1. You can edit these tags by going into the index.php and editing the post title tags. Check to see if post titles have H2 or H3. If they are not H1, leave them be.

Then, in single.php you can go in and change the post title tags to H1. In most themes, they will either be set to H2 or H3.

This will make it so that on index pages such as homepage or archive pages, you will have h2 or h3 as the post titles. But for the actual post pages, the titles will be H1 since they are most important.

Most likely, this will mess up your design because there will be nice CSS for the h2 or h3 title tags, but not for the h1. So when you change them to H1, you want to go in to your CSS, find the H2 or H3 title tags and copy and paste another one below that, changing it to H1. --This will ensure that the new H1 will look like the H2/H3.

I use H2 tags as the headline and H1 for smaller stuff within the post

One H1 title (usually the title), the rest as H2 and H3.
