What Exactly Is `Too Much` On-Page Optimisation ?

Hi guys,

I did get stung by the Penguin badly and yes the new update talks make me feel alittle uneasy even though the new sites i`ve built after the updates only have good quality content and backlinks !

But i`m a little unsure as to exactly what is classed as ` Over On Page Optimisation` other than keyword stuffing where the content doen`t make sense when read back because the keyword is forced into the content.

I have not forced my keyword into my content but i have done all the old skool stuff like .. keyword in 1st and last sentence, bolded, H1 H2 H3, sometimes in alt text of image but only if the content is really lacking the keyword.

When folks say the next Penguin `might` target too much `on-page optimisation` what do they think is too much ??

Thanks Jimk

What you described doesn't sound like an over optimized page.

If your text on the page is relevant to the page subject, Google doesn't have a clue If the content makes sense (to a human). Google looks for subject relevancy, there not smart enough to comprehend If the sentence actually makes any sense or not.

Using too many stuffed keywords is bad. Stick to a 3% keyword density maximum.

Well i actually keep it well under that but anyway as from the answers i`ve got from you guys its only the keyword density to watch out for `in your opinion` anyway and its not going to effect someone like me whos always done the old skool H1 , bold, ect ect ect...

This is actually wrong. There is no fixed percentage to how much kw density is. You just have to make your article/content sound very natural. The same as you are talking to someone personally.

Actually, I use a 2.9783% keyword density without any problem, I had a picture of my mom in the post to be on the safe side.

Unless someone from Google spilled he beans on thearameters of the Algo, just keep it natural.

I am no expert but from what you said your all good. I think it's just basically repeating the same keyword over and over all over the page.

Wanna know a secret? There is no real onpage over optimization that didn't exist before. Things like stuffing your keyword into a page 100 times would kill your site's rankings and still does. Nothing changed.

This all started some time ago when Matt Cutts was at some conference and said there was an "over optimization" penalty coming out. This led to all kinds of speculation that sites that put their keywords in the title tag, h1 tag, h2 tags, and in the content too many times were "over optimized" and going to get hit. Well, the "over optimization" penalty turned out to be Penguin, which is almost entirely about backlinks. Over optimization was just a poor choice of words by Cutts. He was referring to the sites with tons of spammy backlinks as being overoptimized.
