Ranking for a general site or niche site.

Hi guys,

I am just wondering something here... Perhaps you guys can advise me on this...

I am interested in doing a general e-commerce site providing products for different niches online.

I want to know however, for ranking purposes.... Is it better to develop smaller niche sites as apposed to developing a more generic site?

I'm confused as to what route to go down... the generic route or the niche route. I was told its better to develop niches sites as google prefers them... but I'm not so sure about that...

Any advice would be very helpful...

Many thanks,

Sean

Do you mean a site selling lots of different things, the way Amazon does? Or have several sites working in different niches?

From an SEO point of view you're much better sticking with a niche specific site, no harm in having 100 sites all selling in different niches but a general store will have to work much harder to achieve decent results in the SERPs.

Yes, it is probably better to keep relatively focused. Are the niches related in any way at all? If they are you can just categorise your products the best you can. This way you may even benefit from cross selling which can sometimes earn you more money.

If you are aiming to get most of your traffic and sales from the organic listings then it may be better for you to create focused online stores and esure that all your titles and product names, descriptions etc are unique.

Don't cross link too much if you're hosting them all on the same server/IP though.

      Hi Guys,

much appreciated on getting back to me on this....

The long-term goal of the site is to have it sell many products selling under different niches.. So yeah... kinda like amazon or walmart do with their sites. In the beginning some of the niches are related and would benefit in cross selling and offer that type of opportunity. I was going to start off with a few niches that relate to each other and then expand into other markets.

The point of the site was for convenience for my visitors, a sort of one stop shop. The main source of traffic would be seo at least at the start. I thought it would actually be more of a hassle to develop niche stores as to apposed to a generic site for management purposes..

Why is it then.. that more generic sites would have to work harder to get rankings? How do amazon and the like develop good rankings? Is it because of their authority?

thanks for your time on this guys,

      Much appreciated..

Amazon had big investors behind when it launched

Anyway .. if you're the one doing seo for your products .. you'd be better off with multiple niche sites. If you're doing PPC advertising you can have all on the same site.

Now .. if you're still into "free" traffic and still want all your products on one website, you need to set up a strong affiliate network that will promote your store. However, this is not going to happen overnight and your products must convert like crazy. You need to ask yourself why would someone promote your site over your competitors ? .. Do you provide unique items .. higher payouts .. faster payouts .. weekly perhaps .. daily .. on demand .. bonuses ..

Someone above mentioned cross linking on sites on the same host.
I have heard this caution before, but how does one get around it?
I have many sites, as I am sure you all do, probably with your
favorite host. Does it really count that much against you?
My sites do not need dedicated servers, and I do not really
want to switch hosts as I am on a first name basis with mine.
Yes, I do know that 9 out of 10 of my sites are on the same server.

You can pay for seperate IPs for each site.. that will help a lot.

you can do that or find other marketers with reseller hosting accounts and offer to host a site of theirs on your hosting in exchange for them hosting one of your sites
