although backlinking is good i see time and time ago that wariros on this forum fail to mention onsite optimization...

if your site looks bad people arent going to stay or come back not to mention spend money!
if your site cant be navigated people arent going to stay or come back
if your site has poor content people arent going to stay or come back

no amount of backlinks can fix any of those...

by covering at least your basic seo onsite optimization such as:

    keyword in title tags
relavant meta tags (yes do use them they arent going to hurt anyone)
    proper use of H tags
    bolded and italicized keyword text
keyword in domain and file names
    keywords for anchor text
theres plenty more but too much to get into right now...

you will see much more benefit in the amount of backlinking you do...

      Hi,

Here's the ONE top SEO trick.

After asking others, and reading the advice of others, build websites and create backlinks to it and see for yourself what works and what doesn't.

There are certain advantages to this method. Once you have worked them out, you will probably find yourself using this method more than any other.

They aren't supposed to. The question was about SEO, not conversion.

Page 1 is even possible without ANY links (and without submitting the URL to Google) and that's not a trick it's simple logic. Just a bit mind bending at first.
Ummm...no, it isn't. Without a link, or a submission to Google in some way, you won't even get indexed, let alone a page one ranking.

That depends entirely on your business model.

For Adsense sites, it can be much more lucrative to have a plain site that means the visitors are happy to click away on a Google Ad.

There is no blanket strategy that works for everyone as there are so many different models and ways to make money.

What is perfect for one site will be wrong for another.

Getting people to buy something is completely different to getting them to click on Ads.

Take advantage of all the free third party resources there are, like Facebook, blogger, Squidoo.

Concentrate on those that produce RSS pheeds.

Use the RSS pheeds to create more resources using your own content.

Use the RSS pheeds to cross link all your resources.

    Ping all your RSS pheeds.

Submit RSS pheeds to RSS directories create more linking opportunities.

I believe in well optimised sites ... i.e. page titles, domain names, content all built around well researched keywords.

This works well for me. I offer links to Social Networks and RSS feeds but do not submit. I also do some article marketing.

Bottom line all my sites do well on the search engines and I get lots of traffic

        (a) You Don't need "tricks"

        (b) It would be foolish to name "3"...

SEO is very very simple, straight to Google #1 is easy for many many highly profitable keywords using OPSEO alone and very few (if any) back links.

Page 1 is even possible without ANY links (and without submitting the URL to Google) and that's not a trick it's simple logic. Just a bit mind bending at first.

To contribute a short answer to your question...

The Off Page SEO (back links) speaks for itself. "Get some links" it's not Rocket science figuring out which are stronger and which are weaker...

The OPSEO* (On Page SEO) is more of a craft but youd need to blend about 17 elements together. Without all of them you are not optimizing quite enough.

I have a simple checklist superglued, no-nailed, welded, screwed, guarded by my big cat "Al" and nailed to the wall just above my PC...

  • The single biggest factor that will affect your SEO rankings are the backlinks (and their anchor text) to your site. However, this is also the hardest to manipulate. Therefore here's my top 3...

#1 Domain name - Waaay overlooked, if you are building a site entirely around a single or small group of keywords (Sniper sites) and you can afford to do it. Do. It will give you a massive boost.

#2 Use wordpress - Works wonders. You'll rank faster and higher than any html/php site. If you're set on your ways (like I used to be) it's about time you made the switch...

#3 Use LSI keywords - These related keywords will make your main keyword stand out so much more.

    Cheers!
    George

You have everything you need from the comments above, but I will add a couple things.

The biggest thing I would recommend is to study your competition. Know who they are and where their links are coming in from. Make sure you have incoming links from those sources as well.

If you are using pre-formatted blogging platforms such as Blogger or Squidoo you need to study the competition. Google will only return two Blogger sites and two Squidoo lenses for any search term. Look at the two that come up (especially if they are on the front page) and study them. I don't mean speed read through them, I mean study them more than you studied for your SAT in high school. There are loopholes in those platforms. Content is not always king there. Inbound links matter, but not to the extent they do on dot com sites. A lot of people "game" those platforms and get front page Google rankings with sh*t blogs and lenses.

One other thing that George mentioned above. Everyone out there knows about relevant content and inbound links. What very few people work into their mix is the SLI thing. Now, people will argue to what extent Google has this built into their algorithm-but I'd bet my Ford-F150, my hunting dog, and my girlfriend that they use it to some extent. (Okay, I'm taking my dog out of the bet I made above.)

Example: Suppose you are keying in on a search term such as "affiliate marketing". There is a ton of competition. I just did that search. Wikipedia came up number one, but they aren't selling anything, so I looked at the second site--a commercial one.

Now, they have thousands of incoming links, many from high PR sites, so they are going to be tough to beat. But I went to Keyword Density Analyzer and ran an analysis of the site. The tool strips out all of the HTML, punctuation, etc. The key words used on the page included:

Affiliate, programs, money, online, marketing, cpa, commission, revenue, ranked, reviewed, hosting, network, articles, money, visitors, as well as the names of many of the top affiliate programs.

The site has a Page Rank of 5 so it is somewhat of an authority site in Google's eyes. When someone does a search for "affiliate marketing" it is almost certain that Google looks at the content in the top sites in its index and compares the commonly used words related to "affiliate" marketing. Google expects to see those words used in new sites coming into its index. A site with the proper keyword density may not do well (all other things being equal) if it doesn't find semantically similar words in the new site as in the top ranking sites. It does this to try to eliminate as many voodoo, spam, scum auto-posted blogs as possible.

The vast majority of site/blog owners do not take this into consideration. You may consider this kind of theoretical and abstract, but I can guarantee that building content rich with words semantically similar to your keywords will give you some good Google love.

Funny you mention keywords in content.
I submitted some new articles to EA, and lo and
behold, they were at first rejected because the
keywords I had tagged were counted as too many.
I thought that was the point. So, rather than eliminate
the words in my articles, I eliminated the 'chosen'
keywords as I could not give up the density of my actual
chosen keywords. I had never known this about EA, and
    now write my articles carefully.

I do not know the reason for the keyword thing on EA.
My keywords were selectively chosen and inserted at
    good places in the articles.
