Article Marketing & Link Building

It's a well known fact that article marketing is great for link building, but I'm wondering when and if it could be too good to be true.

I would like to know...

When marketing an article, is it better to send it to as many article directories as possible to build back links? Does anyone know if there is some kind of penalty against building too many links too fast? Will Google penalize my rankings somehow?

How many article directories should I send my 1 article to? 300? 3100?

Is more better? or.. just send to the top 50 article directories?

Thanks.

      Well...

      If for example...

Lets say I wrote up an article on XYZ topic and I used a paid subscription to Article Marketing Domination which would currently submit my one article to 3,714 sites article directories. So if I wanted to market 3 articles a week using the paid subscription with article marketing domination over a month, thats over 44,568 backlinks...right?

Within a single month wouldn't Google look at that and be suspicious?

Does anyone else here do article marketing? Can someone give me some good pointers on how many article directories I should submit my work to?
