Static Home Page or Blog home page better for SEO?

Ran across a scenario today and looking for feedback. Do you think it's better for SEO to have a static home page or to use your home page as a blog roll so it's constantly changing?

If using a blog home page won't that cause duplicate content issues since some of the text on home page will match the actual blog post page?

    I use both methods and I have not notice any difference in SEO.

    I wouldnt worry about the duplicate content aspect either as its obvious what its for and it enhances user experience having snippets on the home page and that is what google is all about..... user experience....

      Thanks for the reply Dan =) Do you usually have the entire home page a blog or add some static text above it? Not sure how the meta data works with regards to the page content. Usually on a static page you set the title and meta data for 1-2 keywords on a page. Does it work the same way if it's a blog home page?

    Hiya

    It really does vary from site to site.

    I use studiopress Genesis on a lot of my sites and you can sort out all of the right meta data for the home page there for when you use blog post snippets :-)

    If you think adding an introduction to your site will help the reader understand what is going on then go for it :-)

    Test test test will give you the best answer though

    It makes a difference depending on the nature of the query.

    Example: If you're looking for a local plumber, you'll probably be in a better position using a static home page and optimizing it for conversions as opposed to using a "blog format" where it may be confusing for a user to understand if the site is presenting a real plumbing company or just content relating to the topic.

      It's actually for a local photographer. After viewing the top 5 sites in google for many different cities it looks like they are mostly static pages. He has a blog on the home page but I've always been used to static so didn't quite know how to manage a blog on the home page...

        For a real business, I have no idea why they would want a blog for their homepage. That would be absolutely stupid. You want to get across a consistent message to visitors.

        From an SEO aspect, when I'm working with a real business, they are always using a static page. Content can impact rankings. If you are using a blog format on the homepage, the customer could see fluctuations based on their latest posts.

        Now, when they experience a ranking drop or increase, how do you know if it is because of links you are building or the latest content indexed on the homepage? Diagnosing any ranking problems just got a lot harder.

    when doing sites for local businesses you can use the home page for the pages like....

    services

    portfolio

    Quote

    Contact

    etc... etc... etc...

    It really does depend.... I use both systems depending on my mood :-) Either way you can optimise the page as you need to :-)

    I agree that the home page for a local business should be basically static because you want to decide on what your marketing pitch is and not have some random content based on the subject of the most recent blog posts.

    That is not necessarily because "it's better for SEO," which was your question. It's better for converting searchers into clients, which should be the goal of every business' website. Getting people to your website in one step in reaching your ultimate goal, but don't ever confuse it with the real goal.

    See, I'm trying to create a local-based directory for a specific service in town in hopes to attract adsense traffic. The local traffic per keyword is low (less than 500), but there are multiple keywords fit into the main article and directories and the CPC is up to $3. The only competition on the first page is a government-sourced page and then the individual businesses.
