Directories Taking Over Local Searches

Hi,

Sorry if I have posted this to the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put it. Basically I just want to know if anyone else has noticed that Google has started to rank directories highly for a lot of local searches.

For example I am trying to rank my hairdressers website for 'hairdressers Stoke on Trent'. A month or so ago I was on page 1 about midway but since the start of August there seems to have been a change. A lot of the search results are mostly directories consisting of yell.com, thompson.com, 192.com, freeindex.com etc. I have tried other niches such as 'electricians Stoke on Trent' and it appears to be the same.

Going back to 'hairdressers Stoke on Trent' the directories have also completely taken over the other pages too leaving only a few independent results.

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It seems to me that for local searches that are not very competitive (i.e. basket weaving in Dayton, OH) directories dominate because they have automated SEO on them (where if there are ANY basketweavers in Dayton OH on superpages.com or something) they rank on page 1 by default. You'll find that in more competitive niches where sites are actually putting the search terms in their page titles, they will USUALLY beat out the directories. There are some exceptions of course.
