Remove 301 Redirect - Back to Normal?

Hello

Imagine I have a penguin site,

Domain A.

And a fresh domain, Domain B.

A few months ago, I did a 301 where I move the site to Domain B and then redirected A to B.

But then I see the Domain B now has penalty too.

If I detach Domain A, the original penalized domain, will Domain B be ok? Or do you think that G will permanently hate it?

Sort of a far fetched question but just wondering if anyone has experience. I assume it will be ok...

I have no experience, but I think it should be okay. The backlinks caused the penalty to follow to the new domain. Getting rid of the 301 should drop all the links and the penalty.

I tend to believe mosthost is correct. It all depends if they have somehow penalized your site beyond just the 301 you could be in trouble.

Easy enough to check just remove the 301 and see what happens.

Not much talk on it but there were a few threads on how 301s caused some sites to plummet. Not sure if it has to do with penalty or something different in regards to 301s being used to manipulate page rank.

I have had mixed responses with 301's

I have some that have worked fine and helped to recover a site and I have others which do as you described here.

It really is hit and miss.

If you remove the 301 that should remove the penalty in time on the assumption you haven't picked up a seperate penalty for the new domain with any link building you've been doing.

This is correct. I have removed many redirects (Penguined -> 301'd -> removed) and while most sites (domain B in your example) did recover over time, some are still penalized and don't seem to be getting anywhere.

      Good luck!

I removed the 301 redirect to my newly penalized site about 4 weeks ago... the penalty still hasnt been removed. Seems to have been transferred over permanently unfortunately =(

I dont think this is far fetched at all.

If you can effectively transfer some of PageRank from a domain using a 301 redirect, it only makes sense that you could also transfer a penalty as well.

I would remove the 301 Redirect and then submit your site for re-consideration, that is as long as there are no other factors that could cause your new domain and site to have a penalty.

Haven't tried it yet.But i guess Site B may retain its value by the time if 301 is removed.

301 redirection is just a path so i don't think you have to worry about it.
