Google states that their engine takes "nofollow" literally and does not "follow" the link at all. However, experiments conducted by SEOs show conflicting results.

So is it beneficial to the user??

nofollow means exactly that, it wont follow it, nor will it index the page that the link is pointing to, it used to about 8-9 months ago, but not any more. only time it will index a page is if a link with dofollow (normal link) is pointing to the page

Even if Google don't take notice of 'nofollow' links, it's thought that Yahoo do. I've read this a least a couple of times before, though can't remember where off the top of my head.

Better to have a link with a 'nofollow' than no link at all Though don't go out of your way chasing them.

nah, yahoo was one of the first search engines to NEVER follow a nofollow link. Along side MSN.

I am surprised by some of the responses.

As I understand, nofollow is not synonymous with noindex.

Using the nofollow tag selectively through the site allows you to mold and direct your page rank across your site.

Two days ago, I went through my site and "molded" some of the links across the site (mostly the persistent links in the navigation bar and footer section).

Within two days, my rankings for my primary keyword jumped over 100 positions. My secondary keyword also jumped close to 50 positions. Both jumps were simultaneous within 36 hours of using nofollow to mold the site.

I can conclusively conclude that the use of nofollow tags was the direct cause of this position jump because I haven't added content or modified the site in either way.

Again, I am just curious if it makes any difference to have a page link to itself. If it is useful, or it it should also have nofollow.

      Any thoughts?

I'm surprized to at the opinions of the replys.

the nofollow is only relative to page rank.

and...there is no penalty either way if you link to a page itself. So it's your chose to include it as part of your template or not.

Wow, you are absolutley right debra. The nofollow flag is really only used to control pagerank flow and serves no other purpose.

I love it when someone explains something that you already know, but you hear in a way that hits you on the head.

          Thank you.

it controls it by not indexing the page.

don't believe me, try it out, don't point any links to it via a 3rd party site, and if you do link it internally, place the nofollow on it, it wont index it.

I'm surprised to hear the nofollow also means noindexing but I've generally focus (with great success) on dofollow backlinks. I know dofollow definitely helps with PR and more importantly IMHO search rankings!

Google not only does not pass PR to a NOFOLLOWed link... But their crawlers literally don't follow the link for discovery purposes. They can however discover that page pointed to by a NOFOLLOW link via other links to it on the web that are followed.

Well, based on my experience, SEO is not only about links with do follow attribute. No follow sites are also helpful in search engine ranking. Other SE like Yahoo and MSN still count this links in their ranking algorithm. Still, no follow link is better than no links at all!

ya,i woulnd't mess with mr.BIG G.I go by what he says..when he says "no follow" don't count, then I don't waste my time in analysing that stuff.Because reality is G don't follow the links they say are no-follow in html tags.
(there might be some exception to fact as it might take a little while to get the spider crawl and update site ranking and pattern)
