I have an old site I do nothing with, it was one of the 1st I built years ago, it is well overdue for a makeover but not sure what I can do with it?.

The question is... it has a home page PR4 and many pages are PR3 but then others are 0 or grayed out on the google tool bar.

All the pages are in the same structure and I just can't workout why some are treated different from others by google, they are all indexed, any thoughts?

Site is Online Marine Resources

Dignosing PageRank flow problems is complicated, but there's a neat tool you can use to get a lot of info about what's going on. I wrote an article about it over here:

You've got some good quality incoming links to the site index but you need more, specifically good external links to the individual pages.

I don't think I need more incoming links to get all the pages to PR1 when half the exisiting pages are at PR3 and the home page is PR4, surely there should be some sort equalization taking place, ie some pages being reduced from 3 to 2 or 1, and others being boosted up from gray/0 to at least 1, all the pages are equally linked to the home page

This site is old and has not been touched for at least 1 year so what you are seeing is what google thinks of it, it is a puzzle

      Hi Ken,

The first rule of SEO is that search engines rank pages NOT sites. Each page has it's own individual ranking scores. Once you understand this basic concept you will have the answer to your question.

There are many misconception about SEO and this is one of the most common ones. I'm often amazed when I see folks that claim to be SEO professionals and they lack the most basic concepts.

I'm already aware of that fact, the title of this thread says "In my site some pages are pr3 others 0 why?"

Please the post explanation if you know the answer, I don't know, I don't think it is that simple

          Hi Ken,

Sorry to be blunt, but it really is that simple. Each page earns it's own unique score.

PR is nothing but an arbitrary score given to a web page to indicate it's relative link popularity compared to the rest of the web.

In the past it played a significant role in SEO, but provides very little influence these days. I can't imagine any benefit in trying to balance out the PR of all your pages. I guess it could be fun as a challenge just see if you could do it. Let us know how it works out!

If you're looking to make all your pages pr3, you need more external links to the individual pages which need a PR boost.

    It is that simple.

Google PR is merely a measurement of inbound link quality and count to one page.

don't think you understand the question, more external links might just result in some pages going from 3 to 4 and the others staying at null/0 if I don't understand why, the point is the exisiting null/0 pages should be at least a 1 since all the pages feed off the same home page which is a PR4

This is not an easy question, I understand more about SEO than most people, I was hoping someone would actually look at the site and tell me the answer, not just post general SEO tips

First, don't worry about PR. It has almost nothing to do with what's important and that's search engine placement for the keyword terms you're targeting. Basically, you're fretting over something that isn't all that important when you should be out seeking deep links on individual pages on your site.

My guess would be that Googlebot is giving the PR3 to pages that have the best relative keyword density, LSI, and some other factors as compared to the index. It may even be that part of it is that the first links encountered by the 'bot are the ones that are in the sidebar.

dburk hit the nail on the head. PageRank is just an indicator or unit of measurement. It means very little in regards to your rankings in the search engines.
