Anyone know if there was an algo update last night?

One of my websites rankings went completely off the map, I'm talking 40 keywords ranking from #2-37 went past page 10.

All of my other websites actually went up in rankings and I do pretty much the same SEO for all the websites except I did update the titles and descriptions on about half of the pages of the website that lost rankings.

The amount of backlinks only went up by 180 in an entire month which is about normal, the anchor text is mainly composed of the brand name and URL, then in close 3rd, 4th, 5th etc are keywords but the % of those are around 15-20%.

Did this happen to anyone else last night/this week? I wonder if Google is just trying to find out where to place the website now that the Titles and descriptions got redone but I never saw a complete drop off in rankings.:confused:

    Google does an algo update every few minutes.

    You do SEO, yet did not know that changing title
    would affect anything?

    And you mention description. Description does not
    factor into rankings.

    Google does not try and figure out where your site
    "should" go. It knows where to place it for any
    given search.

    Flippa does not need a link. They have their own agenda.

      This is why you have 5k posts, I read this and thought near the same exact thing but rather then post I went along my merry way.

      Seriously, anytime I want to know if there was something strange that happened I merely search for a Google Update and anything within the last 24 hours. There are about 500 Google updates each year and 365 days a year so odds are yes.. yes there was an update, yes there is one today, yes there is one tomorrow. Just in case you are interested in SEO, there probably will be one on Sept 3rd too

    Paul, I know that changing the Titles affects the rankings but I have never experienced changes in such a negative way. Usually a few keywords would move down a rank or two and more keywords would move up a lot.

    I've also noticed that well written meta descriptions can increase rankings.

    What is the Google dance then?

      Broham...I usually dont think its necessary to be an expert in the field in order to sell the product...but in this case...how can you have seo services in your sig and you don't even know what the google dance is?

    Interesting it must have only been a small % of sites because I have found 2 other threads of members describing the same scenario.

    All of my other sites are still ranking well, just one had a massive dive in rankings. Still looking into possible causes and will update if I find out what exactly happened that way we can all learn a little something!

    Actually there was an algo update. There was a thread on SEOMOZ on this topic the same day which cannot be a coincidence. Hits on my site increased by 50% the first day and doubled the next day but by third day were back to normal hits.
