Trying to get ranked on even 'long tail keywords' may well bring benefits in the long term to a business. In order just to rank well for ONE of these 'long tail keywords' you have to get a ton of back-links in most cases. Then when you move on to the next 'long tail keywords' you have to maintain that ranking for that 'long tail keywords' you have just left.

To me this seems like you stand in the middle of a very large desert waving your arms around hoping that someone who is interested in waving their arms around to comes past and then actually sees you and likes the way you wave!

I could here go on and on about stats but I won't; we all know that all search engines put roughly ten results up and the searcher then tries to sort of them best for them by the very brief description supplied. So if your 'long tail keywords' gets 2000 searches in a month and there are 10 results on average you may get 200 views. On a 1% response rate that is 2, a monthly result of 2 for whatever action you want them to take. Then you have to work your butt off to maintain that response rate.

Sorry that is not what I came on-line for! I don't think that is what most did either!

Would it not be better to post a few, about five, articles in a well know directory, then carry on writing for 'long tail keywords' but don't post these articles. Instead go and find a publication on-line (blog, e-zine, mailing list, website, etc) or an off-line publication in your niche show them your BEST article and get them to publish it for you!

You are then going straight to a bunch of people that are interested in waving their arms and they are already in a big group. Hundreds if not thousands already there waiting to read your work.

One e-zine has 2000 readers, no other articles with a link to another site. 1% response rate is 20. That is TEN times the amount all that work on rankings through back links got you! Do this with even two lists the same size and same result and that is 40 not 20 that responded, 20times the response rate.

You have found a hungry crowd sitting there waiting for your article and some of those want to know even more. Surely that is better than building back links and maintaining them for 2 people to do want you want them to?

The alternative way is the VERY SAME way that is the principle of direct marketing by letter or postcard works. Buy or rent a list of hungry people and send them an article about the subject and where to get more information from, at a price. It works, they make a lot of money and never worry about rankings and back-links, ever and they have been in business for decades.
