My motto is make sure your house is clean before you invite guests this means have your on-site SEO structure in place before working on off-site.

That being said a great place to start is delivering quality content to document sharing sites as these deliver very powerful back weeks and gives you the opportunity to grow your notoriety.

Don't focus on Google rankings but rather focus on delivering quality content that people need and want while making sure it is all nice and neat containing your keywords etc..

Start link building, but be careful and don't rush. Find a solid guide to assist you along the way. Don't just order any random package online for backlink services, and don't blast a bunch of links out and hope for the best.. Have a solid action plan, that is why most people in IM fail, they don't have an action plan or anything legit to follow. There's a ton of backlink profiles out there, you need to keep it diverse and quality so it can withstand the next Google updates. You'll need to learn the Tiers and what backlinks should go where.

Tales the first step in SEO is neither link building or on page content issues - Its learning to do solid keyword research. Once you know how to pick keywords for monetization and understand how to rate competition in that keyword space you are ready to address content and link building - not before.

IF you were a professional runner that wasn't the fastest but needed to eat and pay your bills you would scope out what races you could join that gave you the best chance of winning and which ones you probably wouldn't because of who was running. Thats what keyword and competition analysis tells you.

100% Agree with Mike here. Especially if you're looking to do everything manually, you definitely don't want to waste hours/days/weeks/months promoting the wrong keywords that won't make you a dime.

You can add to the mix creating of content that people can share providing you with automatic link building.

You dont even need to create that content yourself. You may just post snippets of content from other places. Just give credit to original source.

It's a "fair use" this way and you're not breaking any copyright laws. See YouTube stars doing this every day.

Create a fb fanpage and twitter account with links back to your site.

There are definitely a lot of helpful comments. I would also like to add something...

As a newbie in SEO, keep in mind that you are not newbie in life. There is one huge mistake that most of the newbies always do - they follow random strategies written by Internet marketers, and when they don't see the result in few days, they just skip and move to the next advice. My idea here is that these strategies are made to guide you, don't just copy paste them. Use your own mind - experiment with your own ideas!

Before even starting with seo for any keywords you could run a small adwords campaign to see how much impressions those keywords get and how profitable they are.

This alone could potentially save you tons of time and money.

If the website is new I usually do not end in building hundreds of building links in a day but my motto is to be clean and safe. Step by step doing things! But when it comes to a website which is previously optimized after the on-page analysis i go deep in the mission of cleaning the bad links then starting any thing.

I can tell you what not to do...

-Don't build 10000 links to your site overnight
-Don't use anchor text in more than (lowered since updates) 35% of your links
-Don't only get links from the same type of website or in the same type of content
-Don't buy one piece of software and overuse it
-Don't start building links until you are committed to building links consistently for months/years
-Don't rely on seo traffic or any other source of traffic
-Don't waste your time on the wrong keywords
-Don't think seo is free because it isn't... and I don't mean it will cost you time so it's not free - It's not free because if you want to get anywhere you must take advantage of the power of multiple tools.

Everyone was saying what to do but it might be more important in SEO to know what not to do.

    Good Luck!

Well, before you step on the next stage, you should clean your website or your on-page, means make it a quality website, a very good content, and an attractive design.

I would recommend, the first thing you should do after an on-page SEO is classified ads submissions, business listing, or in short start your link building. However, in link building, don’t overdo it, just submit 10, 10 submissions for business listing, classified submissions, and etc. as Google will treat you a spammer. In submissions, your content should be informative, interesting, and unique as people will really like to read with those factors.

Keep in mind that, you should focus your optimization for the people, not for search engines as people are the most important factors in driving more traffic and the more people will visit your website, that will surely increase your rankings in the search engine results page.

I have to agree with a few of the others and say that before you go off page make sure your on page is good. Great content along with proper keywords pointing from title tags, alt tags and meta descriptions should all be gone over and then checked again. Also try to keep your content changing and constantly adding.

I think firstly you have to create a relevant site full of your desired content.
You must optimize every page on your site. This includes careful consideration of the page titles within the code, the page URL name itself, the header of the page, the body text, amongst other content points.

Wow. Some of the advice here is scary. I mean really bad.

Start by reading. Make sure you are reading recent articles and guides (written since say 5/01/2012. A lot of conventional SEO wisdom went out the window with the Panda Updates and the the Penguin Updates -these were named updates to google search Algo.)

    DO learn keyword research.
DO make sure you know the market niche that you want to enter. Learn the lingo. Learn what readers are looking for. check out the top 10 sites in that niche. Learn what makes them the top 10.
DO read articles about over optimization
DO read articles that tell you what the google Panda and Penguin updates changed.
    DO

    What I would avoid doing:
    - avoid advice that focus on backlinking and nothing else.
    - avoid spending a lot of money on any tools or services until you really think you know what you are doing.
    - avoid backlinking advice from people promoting backlinking in their signature.
    - avoid buying any websites until you really really know what you are doing.

If you think you are going to make $xxx a month in 60 days don't.
If you really need to make $xxx a month RIGHT AWAY get a second job.
If you don't like the internet, doing research, writing, reading, trying and failing and trying again, then do something else.

And thats probably enough to get started with.

Try to make good backlinks by blog commenting , social bookmarking , forum posting , directory submission , article submission , video optimization , press release submission . After getting good result , you can start guest posting .
Most importantly should do all the things in steady form . Otherwise you should be penalized by google for spamming , when you are not spamming at all.

You don't really need to complicate things so much. Just look for some keywords using the Google Keyword tool. Look for medium competition keywords around 200-500 searches that is related to your niche and start targeting these keywords as you create content and build backlinks. You'll probably see some decent traffic everywhere in a matter of days. It depends on how much effort you are willing to put in everyday.

There is no specific task to start with, in SEO Off Page work.

You can start with article submission work, since you are new, so your first intention should be to crawl your page, so that it will get indexed asap to get ranking in search engine.

Apart from that you can start participating in forums, social bookmarking, classified submission etc.

and after some time (usually 1-2 months) you can work on all other SEO techniques as well ,
and i hope by follow this you can get high rank on the search engine permanently ,

SEO is really important for business because it is only way to make search engine pay attention to things you offer and they may be pretty close to the products wanted by your potential customers. So you should begin SEO by page content. You must optimize every page on your site. This consists of the page title within code, the page URL name itself, the header of page, the body text among other content things from your website.

    Hello Tales,

It's great that you understood & implemented on-page optimization. To get into off-page, you need to get genuine links from same niche/sector.

    Make note for these points:-

    Do's

1)Get links from exact or related websites
2)Make sure the link you are expecting should be from credible ranked websites
3)If you are expecting links from other side, make sure 'they are giving links with related anchor text'
4)Make sure the website has less out-going links(ranking purpose)
5)Create yourself a social community(Facebook page or Google or forums etc) or engage(commenting, posting etc) within your related social communities.
6)SES -search engine submissions, always prefer to submit to top search engine's(usually Google, Bing etc).
7)Web directories submissions, only go for popular directories. Never submit your link's, article's or anything by bulk, seriously it does identified to be as SPAM.
8)If you have good time, do some infographic about latest things & share it via flickr, photobucket, picasa etc.
9)Do some interesting and engaging videos and share it via YouTube(recommend)
10)Write some high quality, optimized articles and submit to article directories(only top preferred)
11)If you website is product/business related try press release & classified ad promotion.
12)Submit your website to RSS feed directories.
13)Prepare some engaging stuff related to your site & share it via document sharing websites.(recommend)
14)Ask for *authority-bloggers* for getting your article posted in their web-blog. (recommend)

    Dont's & check for....

    1)Never ever buy links(attention)
2)Never ever exchange/build backlinks heavily (attention)
3)Don't go for exchanging backlinks to spam website's(note)
4)Never-ever try software's which create links automatically.

    Aloha!

Of course, in order to start you should make these essentials in the top of your priority list; Keyword Research, Great content, Accessibility, Link Building, Socialize.

But don't push yourself by doing all these at once, take time to study them and you're well on your way to SEO success.

And if you are still in doubt to dive in, you can try to search on SEO/IM websites who offers free videos and tutorials like the one i've been using. GOOD LUCK!
