Is it necessarily high competition if you find amazon and other e-commerce pages in the top 10 of SERP that have PR 1-3?

(none of the results have on-site optimization for my keyword. ie. kw not in title/desc/url despite them showing up for my keyword.)

Or are these actually holes that can be filled with an affiliate site?

I've found that it's almost the opposite. E-commerce sites in the top 10 that have the product, but are poorly optimized for keywords, tell me that Google doesn't have much else to show.

Thanks, that certainly makes sense. I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure.
