Is it worth it to start an AdSense site? How many unique visitors does it take a day to pay for all your bills? I am talking about on a low-paying reference niche.

£5 domain and $8/mo hosting - that's easily achieveable. If you're looking for one project, I'd go with an authority site not a niche site. Niche sites don't earn much per mo but are easy to rank. Authority sites can earn $XXXXX++ per month if you put time/effort in and are knowledgeable.

What is the difference between a niche and authority site?

Niche site you are targetting a few small search keywords (usually). You make the content, rank it for the searches and leave it to earn $$/month.

Authority sites are your daily job. You post to them frequently and write lengthy information content that people want to read. You build up an authorship and following until you're eventually dominating the SERPS with your content.

With authority sites though, you REALLY need to know what you're talking about, so that people link to your posts naturally.

In short: Niche is a small site with little content, however niche sites can also be authority sites if you expand their range a bit. You could build a niche site and grow it into an authority site. Authority is a large site with lots of content that gets indexed immediately when you add new content to the site. Authority means you've built trust and reputation, have excellent rankings in the SERPs as well.

A niche site can be an authority site. Like gasbuddy.com

People liking posts has nothing to do with an authority
site. How many people hate the junk on wikipedia?

You are not an authority because you have good rankings.
You may be high ranking because you are an authority
site. Lot's of junk sites have good rankings, no authority.

Yes, I have said many times that the bare-bones definition
of an authority site, just for a definition, is boat loads of
of indexed content. That's not entirely true, and I have never
expanded on that. Authority means, what site gets top
billing for a particular search term. Wikipedia is an obvious
example. The will rank #1 for a search for, oh say Bob Hope.
They are looked upon as an authority on the subject.

BUT...wikipedia has little indexed content on Bob Hope.
Many sites have much more on Bob Hope. Having "much more," does not
make you an authority site, internet web search terms that is.

Gas buddy, lot's of web pages, very, very little content. But,
they are the authority for gas prices. Lots of indexed web pages
is not indexed content. Pages and content seem to get
          intermingled. Not the same.

The quality of people linking to you as well counts to an authority.

You could publish a website with 1,000,000 pages, content pages,
all indexed, on gas prices. The chances of you being the authority
on gas prices over gasbuddy.com is slim to none.

          Paul
          Signature

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

Yes! It's worth it. Adsense alone will net you money. Combine Amazon with it and you have an unbeatable profit system.. I love that setup, use it in most of my sites, so easy to do too.
