6 months after Penguin - What are safe now?

I got hit by the Penguin update in around February and March. I did everything for my sites then but they have never recovered. I basically gave up on them and have been away from SEO.

Now I have launched a new site a month ago but I have been hesitant of doing any kind of SEO because I really don't know what effective now and what not. Not being effective is still OK but I have been afraid of doing anything dangerous.

After Penguin updates, I heard many different opinions/ideas in regard to what's safe or still effective and what's not. I haven't kept up and things must have changed a lot in this 5-6 months too and some discussions must have settled to a certain extent as well. So I'd like to know what are general opinions at this point.

I'm especially interested in these points below. For example, In February or March, Google was cracking down "unnatural links" but still Link Wheel or Link Pyramid were safe. But people were starting to say Link wheel was dangerous because there are more foot prints etc. I also heard Google was starting to crack down on Link pyramid as well. So what I'm wondering are

*Link Wheel, Link pyramid and if safe any precautions when using them?
*Blasting to the first tier (not the money site - its dangerous, but the tier next to the money site. It is related the above)
*Directories (I heard it started to be ineffective?)
*Article submissions (there were a lot of discussions going on about it and also about the effectiveness especially on spinning)

If you can think of any other points or changes and mention them, I would appreciate it. I basically want to know the digest of changes in SEO for past 5-6 months.

Thank you.

With our services, the only real modification we made was anchor link diversity... works like a charm.

Penguin caused an insane amount of fear and rumors that in turn produced a ton of misinformation.

Just diversify your anchor texts, diversify the platforms pointing to your money site, increasing number of referring domains, and make sure your links don't end up somewhere next to porn/Viagra sites or 'bad neighborhoods'.

It's been less than a month since Matt Cutts warned that webmasters will not like the coming algorithm updates. "You don’t want the next Penguin update, the engineers have been working hard. The updates are going the be jarring and julting for a while."

The only thing that should feel safe to you is providing high quality service/content and obtaining links to it by being so valuable to other people that they choose to talk about you.

Link wheels/link pyramids/spinning are you attempting to scam and manipulate Google. Of course that's not safe. It was never safe and never will be safe.

No way is safe, it just safe in a short time. This time we use blog post and web 2.0 to make pyramid backlink and see it's safe but not sure for a short or long time. Try and try!

If you want to create a safe and high quality backlink then you should need to participate in Guest Blogging. That's accept only high quality content. If you have quality content then your guest post could be published on blog site. It the owner of blog agree with your content quality. So always try to make quality content. At the end I would like to say that Guest Blogging is the safe way to creating quality backlink.

If you provide quality content, you will naturally get backlinks pinging from websites. We never afraid of such kind of updates. Dont just think of link wheel, link pyramid or something. Updating your website frequently with quality content will surely bring you to the top of the search results without too much link building efforts. All the best !!!

Of course updating content is good in terms of SEO and healthy even. But, I do NOT agree that it is always possible to get rank only with keep on updating the site. On the other-hand, in PRACTICAL, even if you have the BEST content on your niche, people usually do not like to copy you, even if they copy you they will hesitate to give a link back, even if they give you link back, most of them do NOT give you DOFOLLOW links. So, you should get into doing link building for you.

Well, I never tried with LINKWHEEL, as I too had read that is dangerous pre/post-panda. However, I used the underlying basic concept of link-wheel. That is posting niche related well written unique articles on web 2.0 sites. But I do NOT link those web 2.0 sites (my mini sites) each other. I keep getting bookmarks and pinging to make those getting indexed. I used this method for my clients as well, it worked, even after penguin.

Apart from that, I used use other methods of link building to make sure, entire link building process is so natural.

Even, I had used some variations in anchor text, After penguin, I had used more variations in anchor text.

Other than off-page SEO, I always recommend my clients to have unique title and meta descriptions for every pages [Even Google too display these things under Google webmaster tool]

Diversity and velocity what matters these days, link and anchor. Personaly I would not use ALN type of links to my money site or to 1st tier links. Why ? Because if this network will be hit like ALN all your links will bring negative impact on your 1st tier thus making it negative seo. Link pyramids works as they used to. Most say increase anchors diversity, but the question how ? Why directories works ? Because they have plain url or naked url. This is looks more natural seo then just random anchor.
I have analyzed my competitors that stayed under the radar, they have lots of paid directories with naked url and anchor text appears only in footer, sidebar, posts.

I would take a look into your competitors backlink profile, and build same links + add more of your own same links or build same related links and build some backlinks to them.

The link building should appear natural to the search engine crawlers.

    I would suggest,

    Signature links on forums
Guest posts with links on blogs
    Press releases

What is safe? All links that are not

    - blog comment blasts
    - article blasts
    - wiki blasts
    - forum profile links

Guess those 4 are the most important ones to avoid, I'm not so creative today.

Variation in anchor text is must post penguin update. Apart form that, try to get links from quality sites instead of blasting links to all the sites.

"Provide quality content and obtain back links naturally."

If you have the quality content, but you are a new site. You should make your links look as "natural" as possible; and no one hear should be vein enough to believe that we're not gaming Google by creating backlinks...even if they're manual.

It was said at least once in this thread, but it's worth repeating...make sure that your anchor text is not just your keyword that you are trying to rank for.

For our personal sites and for our client sites we are using about 20-30% "money" keywords with the rest spread out among "click here, read more, etc"

White Hat Seo, natural backlinks, high authority backlinks, crawler friendly site and Guest posting are the factors that keep you safe after the penguin updates.

Niche sites are over really. Maybe it's time for more people here to look at other methods of making money online.
