When I use a keyword (two word phrase) and do a search in Google my site appears on the 3rd page with the actual position being 25th (the 1st result in 1st page being taken as 1st).

What steps should I take to improve this position to the 1st page and also move up closer to the top in the 1st page? I compete against PR 3 and 4 while mine is PR1.
The keyword is in the name of all the websites including mine! Will I be able to improve by more backlinking? If so, should I use that keyword phrase for backlinking?
I post content everyday and post quite a lot too.

You need to build links continuously, also see what your competitors are doing.

Also, you need to build manual and relevant links for better result.

Thanks Mary. The top competitor has something like 150,000 known backlinks (125,000 dofollow) with 50 Gov and 500 Edu and I have 6500 (actually more like 10,000). What do I do? Build to his level?

Just because the competition has .edu or .gov links means nothing. Those .edu & .gov links could be 100% junk links.

Look at the backlink page PR & overall relevancy of the text on the backlink page.

When you say 35% for all keywords in the list do you mean the ones that are thrown up by the keyword tool? That can run into big numbers.

It's not about the quantity of competition but rather the quality of competition that matters.

What you need is analysis of the existing top 10 results in Google for your targeted keyword and how your website stacks against them. ( on page & off page factors )

There are a number of professional tools available in market which help you accomplish this.

( Merely posting everyday is not going to help in post panda world if your content quality is deemed to be sub-optimal either by algorithm or human quality rater )

Great suggestion. But I want to know that is there any free tools which can give you details of competitor's targeted organic keywords and how many total backlinks a competitor have and from which links or domains?
