SEO and the free flexibility theme

I've been using the free flexibility theme on some of my newer sites but recently read somewhere that the footer link back to flexibilitytheme.com could affect my onsite SEO. If so I'll upgrade to the paid version that has no footer links or attribution back to their site but could someone explain to me why it could be a negative for my sites?
Thanks
Larry

The only thing I can think of is that the link going away from your site will "leak" some pagerank (potentially from each page). But I would say that it is probably negligible. Also, not sure if you can add "rel no-follow" conventions against that link in the free version but that would solve the issue without upgrading.

If I remember rightly, mine had an almost hidden link in the footer to an insurance site or something like that. I asked someone who knew what they were doing to remove it for me.

As for the negative consequences of having those links, well they're most likely not related to your site at all and could be questionable. Plus, it may look to Google like you have tried to sneak it in there(even though you haven't). No positive comes from having those links in the footer, that's for sure(in my opinion).
