New Google UPDATE about Domain Diversity

The article talks about adding more diversity on the first page of Google, so websites with multiple listings should be affected. However it turns out that people that rank for very similar keywords are experiencing drops for some of their keywords while the other similar ones hold the rankings.

More about it here: Google Launched An Update This Week To Improve Domain Diversity | WebProNews

So what can we learn from this? Don't try to rank for many keywords that are too similar I suppose.

For example:

dentist city
dentist in city
city dentist
dentist city state
city state dentist

Now with this keyword I don't think there will be that much change as people just want to find a dentist, but for more general niches it could make quiet a difference.

Seems to be the case yes, after closing examination I saw another client of mine lost rankings completely for one of his very similiar keywords while the other ones still rank at position 1.

Also I had someone else that I sometimes do business with send me an email and he is also still ranking for some keywords at the top 3 while other very closely related ones also dropped to page 2 and beyond.

This is most useful and amazing opinion. We should only select the exact matching keywords to our topic.Google always loves this strategy.

Don't try to rank them but we still use them for diversity anchor text and onpage seo also, just don't care about the rank of them.

    Did I say correct ?

Trust me (famous words) I'm still ranking multiple double/triple SERP listings per keyword/s.

Google hasn't changed anything in regards to ranking multiple pages per keyword from the same domain.

Anyone that doesn't believe me, look at Wikipedia (please don't say wiki is magical).

But you have don this ranking before the diversity update.
You should care about this now after this update.

I have clients targeting 40 - 120 keywords like this. Not seeing a change at all. I have seen a few multiple listings drop, but the primary listings are all still holding firm.

I planned ahead for this though. I try to list multiple pages from multiple domains for my clients.

Plan B is always on standby.

That's one of the reasons I made 3 sites all targeting the same niche (plan B). Still, right now double/triple SERPs per keyword on the same domain are alive & kickin.

Don't anyone get me started on owning all 5 Google thumbnail images per keyword in Google text search (easy...).

Maybe it is me and the way I understood what he said.. but this is what I read:

If a single domain had multiple pages that could show up in the same SERP, all of the pages would not rank as high or say like the 1st page.

Yeah, that is what I took it as too. Nothing to do with related searches.

You can interpretate it in both ways I guess. I got 2 people mailing me that they lost rankings for related keywords (ps I didn't do much seo for either of them to be clear about that lol, only some high PR links), so that is why I posted it like that.

Can't be coincedence that there main kw's stay on top and the very related ones experienced some drops.

One other client had 2 keywords around #9 #10 and 1 keyword at #3.
One of those keywords dropped to nowhere but it just got back, odd stuff.

All I can say is I have several pages that have anywhere from 8 to 15 keywords and none have been touched in any way. So this leaves me to believe that multiple keywords for the same page has not been effected.

Doesn't matter how you read it, ranking multiple pages per keyword on the same domain is still working, at least it is for my keywords. I don't do local SEO, maybe that's different?

Yeah maybe, those people that dropped for related keywords didn't have multiple pages, it was just the same page that ranked but for multiple keywords.

Anyway Matt twittered about more domain diversity so taking care of sites with multiple listings looks like a legit way to take care of that. Guess not when I hear that you guys are unaffected by it.

Ok , that's not the same thing as I'm doing.

I'm building multiple relevant pages around a keyword/subject, then try for double/triple SERPs per keyword. I might have 5-10 pages targeting a single keyword, sit back & watch the stronger pages show up for the same keyword, then make any edits/tweaks needed to fine tune pages.

Obviously I won't rank 5-10 pages per keyword, but the remaining pages that don't rank for the specific keyword will be used as supporting relevant pages (for that same keyword) & they still pick up traffic for similar keyword phrases.

        Nothing negative yet.

Keep an eye on Wikipedia or any major site in the SERPs, when you start seeing them lose multiple pages per keyword (same domain), that would be a sign of what's to come. Major sites have their pages indexed daily, some probably hourly, so they'll be the first to take any hits on something like this.

        So far, so good...

It's just odd that I only hear it from people that have top rankings already, like top 3 or #1, personally I track 50 kw's from just a few random sites of clients and myself and I haven't seen any changes really.

Exact match domains do very well with nice content on them.

I've found it best to have exact match domain with exact match content. Nothing wrong with that. If you sell blue widgets then no problem in calling yourself bluewidgets.com and selling blue widgets.

Agreed, but when you want to expand your business/site in the future with "red widgets", the domain looks out of place selling "red widgets" on a "blue widgets" site.

IMO it would look odd to be selling blue cars on hxxp://red-cars.com

You would be better off owning hxxp://widgets.com, that covers any possible widget that will ever exist.

Whilst I agree in part in my experience when you have a website on a focussed domain it will rank higher and better than a domain that tries to fit all on a generic name, no matter if the content is the same.

Except when it comes time to expand and then you have to start over.. while someone with more open topic already has not just the domain name established but link juice from the internal links as well.

So what can we learn from this? Don't try to rank for many keywords that are too similar I suppose.

That is absolutely new information for me.
As i have learned from here that google diversity update is:
The domains that are having multiple same keywords for the same url should be effected by google.
    Am i right ??

I highly doubt they will actively look to "drop" or "devalue" websites that are ranking for similar keywords, i.e City dentist and City state dentist.

If a user is looking for either and one website is the best match, then that's what's going to show up.

I have noticed over the past few weeks many, many top 10 results that include a bunch of results from the same domain. That is highly unnecessary and annoying so I am glad they are taking steps to fix the problem. I can't remember this being a problem in the past, I wonder when it started? I definitely can't remember the problem before penguin.

This thing was discussed somewhere here before...

Once again, just a misquoting from google.

It's not saying that you cannot have the same domain in SERPs
taking the top spots. It's about giving some other deserving
sites a chance to appear, probably somewhere below the
      "normal" ones.

Repeat:It had nothing to do with the same domain appearing
      multiple times in the top.

Plus, as always, it does not effect 99% (or more) of searches.

People just go overboard misquoting google, sending people
into a tizzy over what is nothing.

This one is doing the opposite, really. Giving people false
hope about seeing their still-junk-site in the top. Aint
      gonna happen.

What it will do is give people that own truly good sites on
a subject, but no real ranking efforts, a chance to appear.
But it does not mean it will.
