I'll give you the short version...

White-hat SEO: Manual link submissions, follows Google (and other SE) TOS and Guidelines, time-consuming, effective.

Grey-hat SEO: Breaking a rule or two, usually when you know how to use black-hat tools properly and efficiently, makes use of SE (search engine) courtesy and human emulation settings, uses proxies, etc. Just as effective.

Black-hat SEO: Unethical SEO practises, unrelated, spammy backlinks, mass submission (low delay settings if any), uses proxies, fast automation tools. Also effective, short-term unless you really know what you're doing. Can easily cause Google penalties in the wrong hands.

Conclusion: All 3 works, it's all about how much you REALLY know about SEO.

Every manipulative type of linkbuilding is BH IMHO. Unfortunately, what The Big G wants is no linkbuilding done only Proper on page seo factors

  Whitehat SEO is the best of course because it's the only legitimate way to earn decent traffic.
  
  Stay away from Black hat.
  
  As from Grey Hat. Well it's still a risk so might as well just stick to White hat if you're already doing good at it. Which by the way you really should.
