Hello,

I was wanting some help with regards to localized searches in google for example if I go to Google and then search 'Web Design' will this then show more the local web designers in my area or will it just show the main competitors who have battled to the 1st page for the specific term 'Web Design'

Obviously if you search for a trade such as 'Locksmiths' then this will be localized. I guess what I'm trying to ask is are certain industry's/niches not localized purely because they are too general?

Many Thanks

  • This is a great question estz,

Google balances the needs of three competing parties. Those of its advertisers, those of its users and its own interests. It always tries to deliver the most relevant results keeping these interests in mind. Local results vary based on the detected location, optimized pages, presence of a place page and the user’s social signals (among hundreds of other factors I’m sure). For instance if you type in book printing, Google will return ads at the top of the SERP, then local listings if it is detected that the searcher is within a geographic area shared by local businesses that have a matching place page or relevant content.

These are all just educated guesses however I would assume that the product or service has a lot to do with whether the results are localized or more general. For example if someone types in pizza restaurants, Google will show results for local pizza places based on the user’s location rather than showing them ones 3000 miles away.

Here is Google (very short) description of how localized rankings are influenced,

    Hope that answers your question,
