The risks? If google finds out, you could get dropped from the serps or have your ranking lowered.

Spinned articles hardly make any senses. Those articles will never get any sort of traffic and ranking from google.

  There are plenty of real risks, but actually it doesn't even matter what the risks are, because there aren't any benefits anyway. The backlink attached to a spun article isn't worth any more than the backlink attached to a syndicated (unspun) one. Spinning the content of the article can't improve the value of its backlink, not even if as a result of the spinning it gets listed in the main index instead of in the supplemental one.

  But in any case, article marketing isn't about backlinks. Fortunately for all of us making a living from it, it's a traffic-generation system in its own right, which transcends SEO traffic.

  Spun content is used to manipulate rankings and I guess it's quite high on Matt Cutts to do list.
  
  If the algorithm doesn't catch it now or later you can be sure anyone encountering it knows it's pure spam. Most of the spun content being pushed out is low quality auto spun gibbirish that anyone can report to google spam team. It's actually very easy to report this stuff to google.
