Parallel Worlds. Alternate Realities and If You Give Me Yours I'll give You Mine

I can't tell you the amount of times I have read in this forum in the last year how link exchanges are a thing of the past. I shake my head every time but realized I have never done a post about it.

The problem arises out of the natural inclination people have to shorten their phrases. Link exchanges are still a great way to get links. What will get you in a bit of some heat is

Reciprocal link building

People shortened that phrase and now its link exchanges are no good in general. Truth is for a very long time there have been more than one kind of link exchange

Reciprocal where you link to a website and that Website links right back to you is not generally a good practice. Three way or parallel link exchanges where you link to webmaster B and he links to another site of yours (not the one that you are linking from) is FINE AND DANDY

Three way or parallel links are one way links and harmless unless you over do it with the same link partner.

Since Most iMers have multiple sites it is a VERY viable way to get links particularly if any of them have Pagerank. The complaint that they will be bad links is nonsense.

A) One way links are good for your site and cannot harm it and a parallel link is one way
B) you choose who you wish to exchange with and for what

The final complaint is that you will have to track your links in case they fall off with the webmaster but theres nothing different about that with any linkbuilding and there is software available that can do that effortlessly.

For those of you who have multiple sites and even those of you who have networks with PR you are crazy not to using those to leverage free and potentially powerful links in link exchanges.

Some people even buy PR sites/domains for no other purpose but link exchanges and they potentially get more ranking power for the same money they would pay a service provider who supplies nothing but weak links.

Thanks for the informative post, never really looked at link exchanges. Do you know how deep google goes when looking at ip address connections? i.e. if I have 2 sites on the same shared hosting, with one linking out to someone else's site, and that site links to my other site...

Does google care at the moment?

Thats would be a reciprocal link which is the bad one. If you use this strategy then its worth it to pony up for the $3-$5 hosting to get them on different IPs. Remember the internet runs on IPs. Machines find sites based on domain names mapped to IP addresses so yes the same IP address is a red flag

Excellent post Mike!! A lot of newbies tend to buy any crap thats out there in the market. and one of the biggest confusions thats been exagerrated so much by so called "gurus" is link exchange. yes reciprocal link building is a no no but a three way link can be a great way to get high quality backlinks without getting caught by any google algorithm. its just about playing smart now and panda/penguin wont know a thing!

3 way link exchanges are great and still work. Same rules apply as with any manual link building; keep your IPs diverse, mix in some social signals and web 2.0 links, and don't go nuts with exact match anchor text.

Are you talking about a reciprocal link between two different domanins on the home page (a.com <-> b.com) or about two domains, with a reciprocal link, but on different pages (a.com/x.htm-> b.com/y.htm AND b.com/z.htm -> a.com/t.htm)?
