Yep, many people have seen their ranking drop from page 1 to page 70 due to lack of diversity. It has become a critical part of SEO success

The anchor text is so important for SEO keywords.
    But what anchor text ?
In Plan of building anchor text, i think there are some steps :
-1 . Use google keyword tool : Search your keyword which makes higher ranking but the COMPETITION is lower. << Use this keyword.
Don't try to STEAL or Get POPULAR/FAMOUS keywords, you will even work so hard.
    2. Find out PR website, especially .GOV, .EDU, put your anchor text there.

Your keyword ranking will increase faster, higher. ( Trust me).
Of course, these keywords are not Popular but that's not the point.
We will make these steps again and again with the High Competition keywords. -> Your website gets points from Google and Google will believe that your website is trusted.

Yes, it's a HUGE factor.. But it really depends on your niche. I've noticed some sites ranking on page one with 90% main keyword. Check out your competition, don't be the "odd" one out.. Always try to keep it diverse.

Anchor text diversity is of paramount importance, especially in the face of Panda/Penguin updates. Your links should come from different types of sites, and you shouldn't use one and the same anchor text.

Here are several suggestions on the variety of anchor texts you can use:

    1. brand, e.g. "warriorforum" instead of "internet marketing forum"

    2. longer variations of your keyword, e.g. if you target "cheap flight", use ''book cheap flights here"

    3. synonyms, e.g. "affordable flights", "cheap airline tickets", "cheapest airfair" vs "cheap flights" - that's what you need thorough keyword research for

    4. images

    5. urls

    6. non-descriptive anchors, e.g. "go here to learn more", "get your copy now", "visit website"

Also if your site has several language versions, you'll quite naturally have links with anchors in other languages, which is also a great addition to the mix.

Acting natural is a great way to go, i.e. if "click here" is the perfect match from the point of view of readers' experience, use "click here" as an anchor.

If you're unsure to what degree you should diversify your anchor text, simply check your competitors' links.

If you're interested in anchor texts only, choose Update -> Internal factors -> Page Info in SEO SpyGlass and you'll see what your competitors are up to.

What works for them should work for you, just follow the pattern or get the idea to feel more at ease.

I would suggest only 10% of your links actually have keyword oriented anchor text. Assuming your website is warriorforum and you want to rank for "Online Marketing" "Marketing help" "Internet marketing" you should get:

    - a lot of naked links http://warriorforum.com
    - branded anchor text - Warrior Forum, WarriorForum
    - general anchor text - click here, read more, etc

You should have contextual links from authority sites that are active in the niche you're after. If you publish an article on Sitepoint for instance (which is an authority PR7 in the webmasters arena) and you talk about internet marketing but use a naked link back to WarriorForum .. I believe that's worth a lot more nowadays than spammy anchor text driven backlinks.

  • Linkassistant has it spot on, you need your linking to look natural, not forced. Think of it as other people creating your backlinks by commenting and sharing links to your site. They would have a variety of anchor text, not really worrying about keyword phrases, all exactly the same. Some would use a relevant word, others would mention your url, while others would just say something like - more info here, check this out etc.

    Hope that makes sense.

Using multiple keywords doesn't make our dedicated keyword ranking down?

Example : If i want "Best hotels in US" in first result.

If i build links with "hotels" "Hotels in us" " "cheap hotels"

      By doing above mentioned.

Do you mean i get ranking for the Anchor text " Best hotels in US" ?

IF so, how the above anchor text diversity wont effect my desired anchor text..?

The best way to determine this answer is to take the top 10 websites that already rank for the phrase you wish to rank for and then analyze their links. If you see a pattern you can then mimic their distribution of anchor text.

People in forums can only speculate.

You should always vary your anchor text. But how much will depend on your competition. I agree with PerformanceMan, you should search for the term and see what your competition is doing. Spying on people can really get you ahead in this game.

yes you need to vary your anchor text, there is such thing as oer optimization penalties,
you need to build links with multiple anchor texts, natural signals, and also naked links with your URLs, and not just building to homepage inner pages also. it shouldnt be a problem, if yo uare building links it just means that you target more keywords for the same pages - so you rank for more things, spread out, and get more traffic - SEO was always meant to be a long term solution, all these 'guru' saying how they make milions from 1 keyword, its changed a lot since then

Yes. diversity plays very important factor in terms of SEO. Always try to make keyword variation in Anchor text. And i also suggest you don't use 2 URL of same page in one post.

Definitely diversity always works. If you leave the keyword which you are targeting then your ranking on that keyword will be down.
