How does this site rank so well with only 34 backlinks?

This is one of my top competitors in NJ (#3 for "home remodeling nj") & I want to compete with them. So I started my own home remodeling website about 2 months ago, and I'm trying to figure out how I can rank it like their site:

http://www.mymoldremovalguys.com

I noticed they do over 2 million a year in sales which is fairly impressive. Then I go to research their backlinks, and see they only have 34. Most of which are linking to the same blog:

Their google listing also ranks well for certain keywords. So they get lots of traffic between that listing and their website.

What drives me crazy, is they are ranking up there with our #1 competitor (total remodeling) who has been doing SEO since 2006. And they have thousands of backlinks.

This is the site I'm trying to rank for myself:

The on page optimization is terrible so far, but I know how to do it so I'm not worried about that.

I'm more curious about what SEO technique I should use to rank the site.
I built about 15 high pr links to my site, none of which are showing yet (but they did stick).

And its done nothing for the site I think because our on page is weak. So once I fix that, what should I focus on? How much work do you think it would take to rank for something like "home remodeling contractor nj"?

My plan is to:

1) Fix the on page SEO.
2) Set up a blog, load it with content, get backlinks for the blog, link to the site.
3) Get a bunch of social media accounts, fill with content, get on a regular posting schedule.
4) Find some more relevant high pr backlinks with scrapebox.
5) Promote my youtube and facebook account.

But it still feels like I'm not doing the right thing. Because innovative remodeling didn't seem to promote any of their social media accounts. Nor do I see any comments on blogs that they left.

It seems the ONLY thing they did was focus on 1 blog rather intensely.

So how would you go about this? Should I just focus on making 1 massive blog and filling it out with content, then linking to the site?

Thanks - Red

    Well they now have 35.

but seriously ..backlinks, while important, are just one of hundreds of factors that considered for rankings.

I think you should do On Page optimization first and then find the high PR, relevance backlink to your site. Your plan look ok to me.

I suggest NOT to go for forum profile links and spammy comments, as they could hurt you back in the long term. Should keep your backlink profile clean and relevance.

    Cheers!

It sometimes happens.Website has less number of back links but that website get ranking high in search engine. At my point of view,It happens when website has relevance and quality back links from high PR websites.

Totalremodeling will be tough to pass by, but the other site with just 34 links seems pretty easy to outrank, the kw itself is also pretty easy so just build some high PR links.

And obvious NOT with Scrapebox!!! Blogcomment spamming = dead, no matter how high the PR of the page.

There are many factors. May be Domain Age, Link value and content freshness and may have promoted in Press releases and popular Blog posting sites. Must be a link value makes this possible.
