I hear a lot of people on here say they are trying to get on Google's first page...but there in position 54 right now....or 24, etc.

How do I know what position my website is in?
(...is it the main website I'm trying to rank or just an article?!?)

Use Googles Webmaster Tools for your site and this will give you a relative position. Bear in mind it is relative to local searches etc... Also Google Analytics is gooing to help you analyse other data for your site. If you are just beginning you should really start learning these now.

I need to look around Google Webmaster Tools some more...

I asked in another forum about 'which tools people were using to track data'. Seems like there are lots of ways to monitor sites. I was just hoping for a 'one stop shop'.

I look at my web host AW Stats.
I look at my WordPress Stats.
      I look at Google Analytics.

...but that's pretty much it. (...keep in mind there isn't a whole lot to look at with my sites right now! lol)

      Thanks.

      - Eileen

I recommend Traffic Travis. I've been using it for awhile now. It's good to use proxies with it though.

  • Hi Eileen,

There are a number of tracking tools. As far as a free one goes I find Rank Checker Ace good. It was promoted on WF a while ago and I've been using it for a while.

Realize that you don't actually track your website's position, just a page of your website for a particular search term. Factors that come into play are geo-location and personalized searches for anyone that's logged into their Google account at the time of the search.

Google Analytics is a very useful tool and you should make use of it to analyze your traffic - where visitors come from, how long they stay, do they visit more than one page, what keywords they used, mobile or desktop, etc.

    Chow chow,
    Kevin

There are several programs and web based services that offer this. Most are paid - such as Serp Buddy and SE Scout, but some are free such as Rankerizer.

Market Samurai, Rank Tracker from SEO PowerSuite, and Traffic Travis are reliable and accurate rank trackers. If you don't want to spend, Traffic Travis is the safest bet though. Just make sure to use proxies if you are monitoring and tracking multiple URLs through multi-country searches.

I'm using Market Samuria and I just realized that's it part of their package! Yeah! lol

I put some data in today to see what happens. I really need to look at (and learn how to use) Google's Webmaster Tools and Analytics. I (honestly) find the information a little confusing...but I'm sure it will make more sense as sites and traffic grows.

You check your position based on your targeted keywords. There can be any number of keywords, so try using an automated tool. The one in my signature will check, track, and graph the top 300 in google for multiple keywords at once. No need to check them one-by-one.

All free, which is great if you are on a budget.

I second this. whatsmyserp.com was recently updated to make its results exactly as the user would make if your keyword is ranked in the top 25. If it is outside the top 25, it uses a different query. Since it does check the top 300 results from google, it has to use a query that returns 100 results at a time which can be a little different, but when it is checking the top 300 for your keyword, it can't make 30 requests. The site is also a bulk on-demand SERP checker, so check your keywords whenever you want, 20 at a time with the click of a button.

All free. Why pay when you can get fast, accurate results easily and free?

Don trust any free tools to track your ranking on Search engines. Manual checking is always best. b'coz free tools do not show you the exact position of search engines ranking. sometimes it will be unique

I have to disagree. If your keyword ranks in the top 25, our site will give you the exact results from google. We also use private proxies and no cookies/caching, so there is no chance of them being personalized for you. For ranking lower than 25, we pull results 100 at a time from google, and those can vary a bit, but paid or not, if you rank 70th, you will see variation.

Besides, who wants to check 100 keywords manually daily and copy the results to a spreadsheet and then graph to spot trends? Ewwwwww!!! Let a free website do it for you at the click of a button.
