Hi,

I have 5 EMD small niche sites that have all been hit with this latest update. I'm just coming into the world of IM and about to start making an authority site so it's not the end of the world.

One thing I have noticed is that all 5 of my sites have been de-indexed all have ctr-theme. My friend has a few MNS sites using EMD which to be fair have less articles and the ones that are on there are of less quality yet his ranks haven't changed. The difference between us is he uses Heatmap theme.

Has anybody else noticed this patter ie EMD and CTR Theme causing the problem?

The theme is irrelevant. The fact that they are EMD is the bigger problem for you.

Mine were all using different genesis framework themes, including some that had to be paid for separately from the package, and have all been hit. This suggests strongly to me that it's absolutely nothing to do with theme and everything to do with site authority.

Interesting looking at changes in results for many diverse keywords I think Google maybe have done the update is looking at the total authority to a domain, so even middle sized sites have taken a hit in comparison with larger ones.

I accept the EMD is the main issue. My point of this post was to see if it was more than just a coincidence that my 5 sites using CTR lost their ranking and my friends 4 EMD sites using heatmap didnt.

I suspect (as does Yukon) that it may be relate to site size. Just a hunch at the moment.

The algo change wasn't supposed to 'de-index' websites. Are you sure your website have been totally removed?

Sod authority site`s why the hell would you want to build just `1` or `2` big sites and put all your eggs in one basket who knows what the next update will be targeting ?? Not a great idea ohh spending all that money building big `A` sites and along comes a sneeky update and wipes it out

So if big authority and MNS sites aren't recommended then what do we build?

Who said big authority sites aren't recommended? I've been recommending them for months and Google has been recommending them for years.

Because 1 golden egg trumps 1,000 rotten eggs, lol.

      Seriously,

Funny how people talk about eggs in a basket, then the only traffic they will ever have is SERP traffic.

You want diversification, easy, multiple traffic sources per domain.

Yeah i have to agree with you i guess the `basket` is actually the traffic source and not the website

One of my guest post sites dropped to nowhere, it's a hypernated EMD that gets new content every week, it doesn't have many back links, and the content is actually pretty decent and 40+ pages. Oh well...

Guess this update will be a hard one to figure out as it's definitely not only about EMD's.

The 3 people that contacted me today that lost rankings and that did NOT have an EMD all used affiliate redirection scripts. Same like I said a month ago, the ones that use cloaking/masking/redirection stuff were always a lot harder to rank then the sites that didn't do that so I guess this update has a few more features that Matt didn't talk about.

The EMD update has impacted sites with very shallow content. People with few keywords and banking on EMD have been impacted the most.
Which version of the CTR Theme are you using?
The latest CTR Theme version is 1.4.9 with Related Posts Features and social media integration makes the site look richer than the previous versions.
I would recommend going through all your websites, revisit the content post EMD update and also upgrading the themes to latest versions.
