Ive been having a think....and I really want to know why YOU create niche sites?
What is the main reason why you chose to do this rather than anything else?

Now I am sure someone told you about that thinking thing...

As a general rule I don't, even some of the spokes I built back when I played with creating web 2.0 sites have about 20 or so articles on them. I find it to easy to sit down and pump out content to not take advantage of it. Some personalities enjoy the fire and forget idea of creating small sites, some people are more driven by creating monster sites with over 1000 pages of content. I do think it comes down to personality.

    Thanks for your input!

Im just generally interested to know why. Whether it be the money, they enjoy it or maybe just because they would rather do this as a job rather than a 9-5 normal job

      People build niche sites because

      A) They think it is easy money

      B) They do not have the resources to or know how to make real sites

        What resources would that be?

Think about it for a second, in order to grow a site to say 1000 articles of content you need to have some knowledge on the subject. Then there is the time or money to create the content. Good example on my one site there is a section dealing with Photoshop. If you are going to create this and be of use to photoshop users you will need to not just know what you are talking about but also experience at using the software too. I would have to think that most subjects that you approach with a full scale site in mind will have this same time of issue to overcome.

That is just my perspective, I am sure there are many more then I have considered as well.

Very true! I only ever have websites that I know a good 80% about and have experience with. I couldnt imagine attempting to write about something I know nothing about

That is part of the appeal of a niche site, you can pay someone to write a few articles and bang.. done with the site. Now just need to work on the SEO aspects and you getting clicks.

My first website had been around for years so I decided to start a second website to really explore what it takes to create a large monster. Tons of work and time but it is finally starting to see the light of day now.

That's kind of the difference, with a niche site you might aim at Highest Paying Jobs for 2012 but with a large scale site.. You aim at every topic dealing with Employment. Just to give an example or at least how I think about it.

Ahh I see. Thats interesting, keep us updated on the difference between a target niche site and a 'monster' site. Ive attempted monster sites before in the past, in an extreme competitive market and fell flat on my face. Because I just lost the interest.

I have a short attention span.

I keep a notebook of everything I do everyday, that way I can look back at things and figure out whats doing something or what isn't. This is especially critical since Google does not take into account backlinks and such for weeks or months. It had taken 6 months before any keyword for the site started to see the light of day. It was a brand new domain and still learning a lot though.

I am retired so in some ways this has replaced my job in many aspects. I was building a website for years without the thought or even consideration of making money with it. Now making money is like a way for me to keep score.

I build niche sites to diversify my portfolio. But when I build these sites, I'll
sometimes use my own domain, sometimes use Squidoo, and sometimes use
    Blogger.

My plan in each strategy is exactly the same, but with great diversity, you have
less chances of having your ENTIRE module come crashing under you with just
    one update.

    And, you guessed it...

I also have a major authority site in the fitness industry, that I will have for
years to come. Again, just another way to diversify.
