As explained in my other thread, when doing kw research make sure you get the basics right, tick the exact box, untick the broad box in Adwords or you'll fail right from the start.

Next thing what I would do is install the SEO Quake Toolbar.

You can find it here, it's free: SEOquake - seo toolbar, plugin, seo extension for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera

There are 4 important stats that I look at:
  • Domain Age
  • Page Rank
  • Site wide Backlinks
  • Keyword in the Title

I kind of ignore the number of links that are pointed at that page. The next image will illustrate why:

As you can see there are quiet a few pages with 0 back links to the page that is ranking. However the PR of that page is showing something different, a page can't get page rank when there are no links pointed at it.

What these sites have in common are links from internal pages, this is a huge thing as there are plenty of people that stare their selves blind at number of backlinks to that specific page, and when they see 0 back links they automatically think, oooh that's an easy keyword. WRONG

To show it in even more detail I made a screenshot of SEOmoz that illustrates it even better:

You see those numbers in the green? That's Page Authority or in other words the number of internal + external links pointing at that page. SEOQuake toolbar uses SEMrush to check the number of external backlinks to a page while SEOmoz has their own system to show that, so in the other green column you'll see Linking Root Domains, which are the external links. While the PA column also takes the internal links into account.

So quit staring at number of back links to a page as it's one of the least reliable factors to determine the true competition. Always take the PR, the sitewide links and the age of a domain into account as well, as age plays a huge role which most people heavily under estimate.
