Can google slap a particular SERP keyword, but leave other keywords untouched? (My case)

Let me start off by saying that my domain URL was an EMD and is over a year old. I won't spoil the niche, but it has to do with an appliance, for this example lets just say it deals with vacuums. The site has ranked top 3 in Google for competitive keyword "vacuum" steadily without any jumping. But has also ranked #1 for popular search variation such as "best vacuum", "vacuum reviews" "best vacuum reviews" etc etc. Over last three days my SERP for "vacuum" suddenly got kicked to page 56 of google, but rest of my ranking keywords stayed exactly in number one position as before.

This scenario leaves me slightly confused, if you get a penalty from google don't you get a site-wide penalty that makes all your keywords low ranking? How can I explain just a SINGLE keyword getting a penalty but others are not. "Word" page 56 penalty from rank 3, but same exact "word"+review, or best+"word" untouched and #1 in SERP?

If this is a result of the recent EMD algo change by google, does that mean my site has a hope of returning since its still ranking high in all other keywords?

Yep, it happens all the time if you build backlinks vigorously.

In theory of those particular links go away, the penalty gets lifted correct? And by "build backlinks vigorously", the keyword that got the penalty would be the one that I over-backlinked as an anchor?

Edit: I just removed the only 5 backlinks that I made last three weeks using that anchor. Will report back with progress If I'm able to return to page 1 or not.

****But still looking for feedback from other members with experience in this issue.****

Yes please report back! I have the same problem and am about to delete the last links I made that caused the problem.

    Thanks.

Is it something that goes away after sometime if I remove the problem backlinks? Or do I need to submit a re-consideration through webmaster tool?
