Yep, one of my sites just got hit for being EMD which was ranking #2 on Google.

After the penguin update, i started a site, unique content, plenty of pages, white hat seo, backlinks from relevant sites in my niche, all at a steady pace, made sure the content was more relevant to the users than anyting on page 1, got good social signals etc, kept on updating it and so on!

This is what they want right???

Seems not!!

So they then reward me with ranking my site on the 32 page lol!!!

How dare they drop my rankings that low down the serps just because its appraently a low EMD? They havent even been on my website, its by far better than anything on page 1!

If there going to do this then they need human reviewers right????
End of the day they seem to be making the searches terms worse if you ask me, their suppose to be improving them!!

I know it's early days, my site might jump back, if it doesn't i deffinately won't have anyhting to do with Google, ie adwords etc....THEY CAN KISS MY ARSE!!!

Sorry for the rant, just fed up with Google ranking authority sites that have power and money....big deal

      Couldn't agree more.

Matt whats his name at Google has gotten carried away and has single handedly, over the past year, turned Page 1 results into a joke in many many cases.

I also had some great sites hit for no apparent reason other than EMD(as far as I can tell, everything done right).

I think Bing is doing the right thing by raising awareness right now as Google quality spirals, and even non-imers are scratching their heads at what they see returned when they do a search.

Well, all of my sites are gone into oblivion and I'm not planning to register a site with EMD anymore. I think I'm going to register a domain with a very unique and unheard of domain and post whatever I wanted to, including cursing Google...

      Here is my viewpoint:

If you have the best content on the internet for a given topic, you should be on page one for that topic.

I say "should" not in the sense of you have a right to it -- because Google is just another website and they can do what they want with their website just like you can -- but in the sense that cream rises to the top.

But if you do not have the best content on the internet, then whether it is page two or page 32, why should we be concerned? If your content isn't the best why shouldn't your site be out in the bleachers?

So, rather than just look for blind sympathy from the distempered masses, post a link to your site. Then you'll get educated opinion about whether it's your site or if Google is really just being bad.

We're on the same boat blend. GOOGLE is Google. All we have to do is try other approach and we need to constantly update ourselves. We are in the world that change is everywhere. Maybe some of our tactics doesn't work these days.

Quite a tricky one but we need to.

If that were true, I could accept the changes willingly because I need to use searches regularly in my real job. Unfortunately, I have found personally that these changes have NOT improved the search results - just the opposite. I now find myself using Bing much more often and have in fact changed it to the default search engine in one of the browsers that I use.

These updates are done for the shareholders, Google makes their money with Adwords and the sites with EMD's even with great content are taking away to much of the content...

You can't fight it, Google has the monopoly, the only thing we can do is go with the punches or have all webmasters tell Google to take their site out of the index, i don't think that is going to be happening very soon... so adapt or die

I just had a huge cut in my traffic, because Google took my biggest keyword from 100-150 visits per day to about 10-20. If their goal is to piss off as many people as humanly possible than they are world class winners at this.

If Google's ultimate goal was to have more PPC advertisers, they would be augmenting their algorithm to favor smaller sites versus authorities. Big authorities are some of their biggest advertisers. If they get enough free traffic, they may cut back on their PPC budget.

Also, for every site that moves down, another one moves up. That one that moves up could have been using AdWords and now decides to stop paying for ads since they are getting so much free traffic.

AdWords would not exist without search engine traffic. The reason they make so much money off of it is because so many people use Google for search. A company as big as Google is not going to just make decisions to implement major algorithm changes like this on a whim. I am sure they have a ton of data telling them this algorithm gives their users more of what they want. It may not be what IM'ers want, but IM'ers live in a little bubble. They do not realize that outside of that little bubble, they make up an insignificant number of search users.

Are the search results perfect? Absolutely not. But there were bad search results before Panda, before Penguin, and before this latest shift. That is nothing new. None of us have access to enough data to truly categorize the search results as getting better or worse though. Maybe in your little niche and your little world they look worse. That makes up about 0.0000000000000000000000001% of the search results though.

lol now you're all about data?

Google is a company that wants to make money, look at how the SERPS look, 2 ads depending on the keyphrase Google maps or Google shop, you're already at position 4 at best... Googles only concerns are the stockholders, not the users and certainly not the webmasters...

Doing away with the EMD's and have only wikipedia and for the rest unrelated results for the keyphrase people will click more on the ads, remember the core business of Google...

When wasn't I about data? I want to see proof. I could care less about anyone's feelings.

No shit Google wants to make money. And if they provide search results that people do not find useful, they will lose their search users. If that happens, how many people do you think are going to be buying AdWords ads?

As far as being on position 4... I have never found a SERP where I had a #1 ranking and it negatively impacted by traffic. The #1 organic result still gets the majority of the traffic, not the top 3 ads.

And they didn't do away with EMD's. There are tons of EMD's still ranking. They just got rid of the stupid boost they used to give to them. I see nothing wrong with that. You can still rank an EMD. Google didn't take that away from you. Now you just have to put in as much effort as all the non-EMD's. Seems fair to me.

As for the #4 i defiantly have noticed a big drop in traffic when Google Maps was integrated in the SERPS, up up 50% of the traffic was lost.. so for me it did made a difference.

And about the EMD, i really don't think it is just a matter of giving the EMD no extra power and that you can still rank them... but i have to wait it out for two/three weeks and see what my EMD's do..

As for now i would not recommend to setup nuw EMD's

It certainly could be niche specific. I could see in a product search, if the Google Product listings are showing first, that could drop the traffic of the #1 organic listing.

On the other hand, those are probably more of what users want. They are generally bigger name and well known brands... Amazon, Best Buy, etc. Most people probably feel more comfortable buying from them than littleEMDsite.com.

We may not like that, but it probably is the truth.

I'm still seeing a LOT of EMD's ranking just fine in everything from medical niches, to gambling niches, to local businesses, to porn niches.

They can certainly still rank. I really think Google just took away the extra preference they used to give to them.

Also, Matt Cutts confirmed there was at least one other algorithm update at or about the same time as this update rolled out. That can lead to some misdirection. People might be thinking they got hit by the EMD update, when in reality it was another tweak that caught their site.

Not entirely stupid on Google's part. Keep people guessing.

Matt Cutts is a joke, and so is Google (on so many levels). I'm done with the SEO game. It's just too unstable.

I'm thinking instead of creating sites and trying to get targeted traffic, I'm going to reverse my business model...find sites that have lots of traffic, and put something in front of those eyeballs that will lead to opt-ins, conversions, etc. No SEO needed, just a lot of testing.

If you look at it from Google's POV, they've got tons of spammers who are using automated software trying to game their algorithm for high rankings. I don't agree with Google's decision to make negative SEO possible, but they had to take action against the idiots that want to rank high with crappy sites to make bank.

I agree 100%. This is one of the main reasons I am increasingly using Bing. If I am searching on a tax question, I don't need multiple URLs from the same site (often that end up pointing to the same information). I want multiple sources to choose from. Google is no longer delivering the best search results for my searches. Isn't that what the goal of search engines is?

That's probably me your seeing on the multiple SERP listings.

There's nothing wrong with that (multiple SERP listings per keyword) as long as the pages are relevant to the search phrase.

Everyone has the option to rank multiple pages from the same domain (per keyword), most people don't bother. Really it's the guys that don't bother own fault considering they know it's possible to rank multiple keywords/pages yet the don't care enough to actually do the work.
