Directory submission (is it still useful or risky?)

Hi,
I personally did well in SEO before the penguin update but got hit hard by it. Now after the penguin it scares me whatever SEO I do (Even white hat stuff I stop and think what anchor text to use).

I have a new site and I don't know where to start. Usually I started with directory submissions but I wonder if it is still useful to some extent or not. Is it at least not risky?

My worry is though it is will be my brand name I put a link, there will be many same anchor text links and you can't say each directory page is high quality even the root domain has a high page rank and Google penalize it.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

There are good quality directory submission and there are bad directory submission. If you are thinking to buy some fiverr gigs with 3000 directory submission then yes, you are sending crap on your site.

About anchor text I tend to keep my

    -main keyword anchor at 15%
    -secondary keywords 20%
    -raw link 40%
    -generic anchors {click here|this site|etc} 20%
    - whatever you want at 5%
    Signature

Want Google Page ONE Rankings? [YES] [NO]

Directory submission still works great. But don't use those free directories. Most of the paid directories are real human edited and their backlinks are very usefully even after penguin.

Thanks, hay can you share some quality directories?

Also as the discussion says I too agree a huge sum say 3000 + directories will definitely harm.

But how if we go Fiverr and buy just 25 to 30 or say 50 quality directories only. There are many at Fiverr who offers just 25, 30,50 quality directory submission only?

Just make sure to submit to quality sites and diversify your anchor and you should be ok.

As your website is new one, definetly you can try out for directory submission and ensure that you have quality submission list while submission and wait for the approvals. Getting quality back links will boost your traffic.

Since you were hit by a Penguin, you probably didn't do your best SEO. Although there is no need to get disappointed, as you can start doing White Hat again and can easily rank your website.
