Correlation between EMD and Penguin

Hello guys,

I suspect a correlation between the latest google EMD and PENGUIN update.

Maybe this EMD is google Penguin in disguise, tweaked to hit the exact match domains more.

I base this on the following:
After the first penguin update I have tried to fix my websites, good links, remove bad ones, etc.
Now I see allot of hit penguin websites recovering (even EMD).

Any thoughts from your experience?

I never believed penguin was about anchor text diversity why? Because I was ranking just fine with %75. I started to change my strategy because I thought it would catch up to me and now I do believe emd plus exact anchor = easy spam signal for google.

I think google really screwed up with penguin and got allot of people mad (not only for using animal names .
Now, instead of calling it penguin they are calling it EMD, see how it goes and than maybe come up with the next penguin refresh.

They all work together and it's the SEO community that really names them. Penguin is about web spam and originally labeled over optimization so I could see how it correlates.

So far my emds with small backlinks are fine and my phrase domains with heavy targeted anchor texts have text.

Matt Cutts confirmed that the EMD update has no link to the Penguin and Panda updates whatsoever.

EMD's are NOT the issue with this update. My cheapgreenwidgets.com site has had a traffic surge, while my non-EMD sites have been smashed.

This EMD update has nothing to do with back links unless you can explain me why of 80% of my clients (local businesses) none have experienced any drops in rankings, and the other 20% of affiliate/adsense clients about 1/3rd of them lost rankings, while they all had the exact same back links.

You could say, yeah but local businesses have a cleaner link profile then adsense/affiliate sites, which is quiet true in many cases but that flyer doesn't seem to go up here as I have just as many people who started out with 0 links on both fronts.

Anyway it's probably just a huge combination of things.

I think NIK0 is correct. It doesn't appear to affect local sites. There are just too many local sites that have EMD or PMD (i.e. Bob's Plumbing). A good portion of local sites have their keyword in their name. If google goes after EMD or PMD they will kill the local search. And in addition local sites don't have lots of words on the main page and the quality is marginal so it can't be quality.

If it is EMD it is non local business EMD.

    Regarding freshness algo:

My site was just updated 1-2 weeks ago, where I doubled the # of pages...I was still hit.

But I do subscribe to the theory that it may be a combo of Penguin and Panda type algos.

It would appear the EMD update seemed to have impacted thin content sites more than others.
