Is this Google update related to BOUNCE RATE?

Hi all,

Some of my sites were hit hard in this Google update, while others were unaffected. This gives me clues as to what's going on .

First of all though, please bear in mind that this update isn't just targeting EMD's. Get that out of your head - it's NOT the only purpose of the recent update. My worst affected sites don't use EMD's, whereas my crappy cheapgreenwidgets.com site I bought here on the forum has had a surge in traffic !

I'm starting to think that BOUNCE RATE and PAGES/VISIT are the keys. However, as well as your own site's bounce rate, I'm wondering if Google is benchmarking your site against your COMPETITORS.

OK here's the thing. I have some dating advice blogs. They have a bounce rate of around 62%, and average around 2 pages per visit. That's pretty good. HOWEVER, I do also run a dating site, and this has a bounce rate of 46% and 8 pages/visit. So you can see that my blogs aren't nearly as compelling as an actual dating site.

This is all well and good, but I still don't see many dating sites listed for many keywords. Even worse, for one keyword I saw the same site listed 15 times in the top 30 results, plus one result from a forum spam posting. And talking of forums, I do now see an awful lot of forums, answers type sites and that sort of stuff. One thing I don't see much of now are blogs. And I don't see an awful lot of quality either. Opinions yes, quality no.

SMALL NICHE SITES EXCEPTION: I must mention that some of my sites have been unaffected. This puzzled me, because they use pretty much identical techniques (same WP templates, same sort of articles). But then I figured that bounce rate and other statistics aren't very accurate with low traffic levels. So I guess that Google don't penalise small sites for having low bounce rates, but once they rank for big keywords then they'll probably get smacked down . This is also why my cheapgreenwidgets.com site is doing OK, especially as its in a niche where all the competitor sites are junk (most sites are built by micro-business owners). It might also be true that Google aren't applying these metrics for lower volume keywords.

OTHER NICHES: I used to rank well for IT questions. Now I don't. Google now likes crowdsourced solutions sites (e.g. StackOverflow). Tropical fish - I've gone from that niche as well. Google now loves fishkeeping forums (of which there are hundreds).

So what can we learn from this? Well improving your site or links is probably a waste of time - you're barking up the wrong tree. I guess it might be possible to revive a site by taking off the posts that were targeting big keywords (i.e. 1000+ monthly volume). I might try this.

I'd say if you have a PRODUCT, then you'll need to learn how to make money from PPC campaigns. I guess you knew this anyway. Search for watercoolers and above the fold, you see 13 Google ads and 3 organic results. Google will continue to cream off profits on the best queries until it gets some kind of unfair competition lawsuit.

If you have a blog or authority site, turn it into FORUM. Either that, or you need to target long, long, long tail keywords (<500 monthly volume).

Finally, if you just want to make money online, look beyond niche sites.

I wish that Bounce Rate Elimintor was still for sale, although I'm not sure it would help recover a site's rankings. Let me know if you know anything about this plugin.

Anyway, let me know your own observations .

One of my sites I average 75 percent bounce rate . And it wasn't affected at all.

improving the amount of page views you ahve on your site, isnt going to hurt, its a good way to make more from the same amount of traffic, getting a more reliable site that people will want to go look at in more details will only be of benefit to you

I don't think it is bounce rate or even backlinks as others have stated on the forum! But I suspect a few factors, namely:

    • Commercial Intent of the Query (KWs)
    • Search Volume of The Query
    • Query (exact or partial) in domain, title and more than one H tag
    • Site Structure

Bounce rate does depend on niche and type of query. That's why you need to compare your figures across your niche.

All I know is that my friend has one massive forum site, and he's only ever growing in the rankings. If he knew keyword targeting, he'd make $$$$.

One good thing is that bigger, authority niche sites do quite well in Yahoo. My first niche site got kicked out of Google ages ago, but I didn't actually notice because I was getting HUGE traffic from Yahoo. Yahoo likes sites that are at least a year old, then their traffic builds quite steadily.

Google won't stay #1 in search forever - it is making BILLIONS and Apple/FB/Microsoft/some bright new thing want those billions!

Not forever but they will remain number one for a long time IMO. I was using MS Adcenter a few weeks ago and might as well went in with a sheepskin and club in my hand because they are ancient in terms of innovation and sophistication. You can only target a handful of countries!

On the other hand Google is busy banging the emerging markets with heavy advertising and they are even giving away free site's to business owners.

I am in South Africa and when I do a search on Bing I get NO ADS (ppc that is) because advertisers cannot target this country.

Bing are just not as innovative as Google and they are always lagging behind! Apple on the other hand have what it takes to compete with Google in the long-term and I hope they do!

Yes Google will be around for a while, but that's a topic for another thread.

Actually I've done a bit of thinking, and the way forward for me appears to be a Joint Venture. So what I've done is to approach a guy with a much bigger site and offer to join forces.

Yes, there is. One of my keyword is on page 2 then suddenly not top 100 and then goes back again. It's been going on like this for days.

Bounce rate is important factor but the last update includes many more factors.

Yes it's not the only factor. I'm not even sure that Google can measure bounce rate for every site effectively.

But the thing I've noticed is that it loves sites with low bounce rates. Real people also like compelling sites. So this is what you need to focus on if you want to build a long term online business.

Of course they are benchmarking a site against competitor sites. Your web site doesn't exist in a vacuum. You have to compare something with something else. It would be like saying your car is fast because it can go 150 km/hr. But you don't know because there may be a bunch of other cars going 200 kph or more. So saying that you get a certain bounce rate (or any other metric) means nothing and is neither good or bad until you compare it to others (who has the fastest car). By the way, bounce rate is not likely one of those factors.

Agree there. Google is innovative and uses that to get users to use their services and stick with them. That's why they are number one and why they make the money. The problem with Bing (Microsoft) is that they come from an industry where it is unthinkable to give products away. I'm not sure why they started a search engine in the first place. If they were more like Google, they'd get a bigger market share. They certainly have the money to do that but not the progressive ideas. Same with Apple so I don't expect them to start a new search engine. If I was them, I'd be happy with what I'm doing now. It doesn't appear they will penetrate more into the PC market. They have a big chunk of the mobile phone and music market.

Same situation like yours, lets wait it out and add more content as usual.

Just checked my friend's larger site in my niche. His bounce rate is better than mine, but not that much better. Also his visitors visit an average of 3 pages, against 2 for my site.

Maybe bounce rate eliminator and other solutions would help out a niche site.

Longer term my niche sites could do OK. The site I started in 2010 gets huge traffic from Yahoo, but it really took a long time to build. For the first 6 months I got nothing from Yahoo at all!

I also have a long list of ideas - all this reading of The Answer and The Secret and Think And Grow Rich seems to have helped me train my subconscious to get me out of this sort of situation. Remember to visit the Mind Warriors part of this site!
