I got this local client who wants me to make her a website.

I have check for various domain name and im wondering what would be best in the state of seo/google algo updates :

1- Service + city.ca (example of service: Teaching + newyork : Teachingnewyork.com is available)

2- Brand + service (googleteaching.com)

3- Brand only (google.com)

Also, once the website is done, what are you step to ensure she gets in the google local listing box ?

Thanks

There is lots of controversy about the so-called EMD penalty. (Exact Match Domain)

    Read this: EMD

It may not be a penalty at all for the EMD, but for other techniques being used by the EMD, such as unnatural back-linking, keyword stuffing, etc...

To get in the Google local listing box, of course you need to be in Google places, and have some good back links to the site, for good PR. More high-quality, relevant back links, will bring you closer to the top of the box.

Your domain name will become in effect, your brand name.

The more local you get, the lower your competition, and the better results you can achieve locally.

I would say anything memorable would be fine. EMD don't carry any weight anymore anyway. Some say they being hit if low quality

I would stay away from any exact match domain. We know it is normally not natural to have exact match domains, and Google has recognized that. People are still trying to figure out what the exact match domain update exactly consisted of, but stick with a branded domain name. The branded domain name should be a .com if at all possible, should be easy to remember, and not contain hyphens.

I think you go with whatever is going to be most brandable and don't be too concerned with the EMD penalty. I believe that based on what Google does in other situations, the "penalty" is probably removing or at least reducing any value that the EMD added to the SEO. That means "CityvilleDentist" is no better than "SamPayneDDS" but it is also no worse. Assuming the name is neutral for the search engines, what is the best URL for your client?
