HELP! Need some advice on the best way to implement a blog for SEO benefits?

Hi guys,

Quick question about putting a blog on a website for the SEO benefit of having regular, fresh content added regularly.

This is for one of my SEO clients, and I've advised them to have a blog put on their website to help with our backlinking...

I'm now having a 'heated' conversation with their web developer on the best way to implement the blog...

He wants to utilise blogger or tumblr for entering the blog content, and then pull the content into the clients main site by implementing a RSS feed.

He suggests that this would allow the content to sit directly within the sites main domain, instead of having the blog on a sub domain.

________

My question is - would this still have the same SEO benefits as having the blog implemented directly on the site? As in www.clientsite.com/blog/ ?

After suggesting to them that I would like to see a wordpress type blog on the site, they replied that they don't see how google would know that the content isn't located on the site, as the content would be loaded in the code behind on the blog page and be rendered as per all the other text on the page as far as search engines are concerned - i.e. if you look at the source they will just see the blog text.

_____

What do you guys think? What would be the best scenario in this situation?

It seems to me that your clients web developer needs to do just that, develop the web and not do SEO work.

As for your question, I would think personally that having the blog hosted elsewhere would give you a backlink but it's still a blog and your still going to target your keywords with it... On site or off site, your the expert so put your foot down and tell the dev to butt out.

      Just my 2 cents

If your client's blog will be hosted elsewhere and will be accessible from other URL as well (such as tumblr), syndicated content on your website may look duplicate in the eyes of search engines.

Technically, no it won't be. Duplicate content is the same content appearing on the same domain repeatedly.

It's scraped content which is treated differently, but still could have a negative impact on rankings.

Actually I would roll over the whole site over to WordPress. It would help them overall in dynamically adding content.

Thats what I would like to do, and actually requested this from the developer in the first instance. Unfortunately its a case of 'they know better' though, so having to work with what we've got.

I contacted them this morning, and all seems to be resolved now anyway so THANK YOU to everyone for the advice, certainly helped me in resolving this!

I think you are overestimating the value of a blog personally. Big SEO myth that blogs carry some special ranking power.

Anyhow, if I'm understanding this situation correctly, the problem with importing the blog from elsewhere is giving the appearance that the site is a scraper site, something that has fallen out of favor with Google. The blog posts might get indexed on Tumblr or Blogger, but never index on the client's site.

      Hello there!
I totally agree with you. You do not want those blog contents to be credited to "the other" website such as blogger or tumblr. I see nothing wrong in putting the blog in your client's website. Just go with it.

    Thanks for all this guys...

I think from their point of view, its going to be difficult to install a blog on the actual domain - so to make it easy for them their suggesting going with tumblr/blogger, etc, and then pull the content in...

Apparently setting up a blog in a sub folder wont work as the site is .net based so setting up a php blog (ie wordpress) in a sub folder will cause hosting problems.

They've requested if there are there any .net based blogs that I would recommend – dasBlog is one which seems fairly decent...

Anyone have any further suggestions based on this?

Thanks again guys, really appreciate getting other peoples opinion on this!

Yeah. Depending on the niche, I would just skip the blog. Big F'ing lie that blogs offer some SEO value.

Just setup some static pages with relevant information instead.

Now if the niche is a changing market, like laptop computers, yeah a blog might be worthwhile.

For most businesses though, there is no need for a blog.

Wordpress if full of bloated code. If you use free themes, they often have malicious code or links embedded in them. It is also a security nightmare. Nothing seems to get hacked more than Wordpress sites.

If you have a programmer that can remove all the bloated nonsense within Wordpress, great. Of course, by the time they are done doing that, it probably would cost about the same to just have a site coded from scratch.

Best thing to do is have a proprietary CMS system really.

I know Wordpress is cheap (hey it's free), but it really is not always the best solution for real businesses. If you go anywhere outside the bubble of the Warrior Forum, people would laugh at you for even suggesting it for a real business.
