If You Survived Panda And Penguin You're Just Lucky Not Clever

Just wanted to throw a bit more wood on the fire...

I have 3 Wordpress sites, all EMD, all following the same format but in 3 different niches but all music related.

Apart from the actual content (obviously they are different niches) they are identical. Same plugins, same amount and type of SEO ( I know this because I did all 3 sites in sequence).

All the sites are informative and contain original content. Nothing spun or copied from other sources. All written by me.

2 of the sites have maintained page 1 status. The other has been knocked into oblivion. It's still in the SERPs but was page 1 and is now not even top 50.

I'd suggest this adds an element of luck into the process of ranking a niche website.

Change the blog title, H1 tags, H2 tags, add a breadcrumbs plugin, remove the *identical* plugins, *reping* the whole site url base, wait a while until it is back again, put the plugin you took out, back again

No the latest haven't affected any of the 3. April 24th was when one site went south.

As with anything, if you don't plan you end up relying on luck to survive.

Then I am super lucky because my big sites haven't been affected by any of the Panda or Penguin updates. Since they are not EMD sites, the were left alone by the EMD update as well.

Seriously, there is no luck involved.

Isn't that because you don't do any backlinking?

I think Google added randomization to the Penguin algo so people don't know what is going on. I have sites that went to page 100+ yet another site just moved down to page 3 in the SERPs, but it was using the same backlinking and on page SEO as the other sites.

That is correct, for the most part. The only "linkbuilding" I do is auto-bookmarking each new product review that I publish.

There are contradictions and your luck in context to SEO totally depends upon you work. The good work or the short cuts.

The whole description here doesn't even mention your sites' link profiles...Have you checked how is that with the one that got hammered, before concluding it is all a matter of luck ?

The link profiles are exactly the same. I said that in my OP. There is no reason why 2 sites should survive panda, penguin or the recent EMD hammering and 1 not survive but 2 of them have. Has to be luck!

Interesting. You might try to make a spreadsheet. How many time your EMD keyword shows up in all 3 sites, as well as links.

Keyword - Title, Description, H1, H2, H3, Content, Internal Links, backlinks

    Find out what is different.

The sites use the same wordpress template. The formatting/stylesheets are pretty much the same although the designs are different. All 3 have around 300 backlinks using social monkee (which I do regret because I still think that this had something to do with it). The EMD's are 3 words in each. The site that has been hit has better content if anything and has around 30 pages of what I would consider to be good original content. The 2 surviving sites have around 10 pages each.

That said none of the sites is remarkably different form the others as far as internal linking etc.. goes.

Drilling down a little further I can say that the 2 surviving sites promote 1 product. The site that's been hit promotes 3 on separate pages throughout the site. The ad placings are all below the fold on all the sites.
