Silo structure themes and questions

Hi all,

My new site is going to (hopefully) have as close to a silo structure as possible and I wondered if there are any good wp themes out there that can be recommended.

Presumably using a sidebar is out of the question as they are usually not dynamic enough to display the relevant links for each page. Is it best to scrap the sidebar and add links manually to each page using a CSS3 plugin? Is there any way to automate the generation of links for each page or will I have to add them all manually to each page in the silo?

Are header and footer links disregarded by Google or would I have to create an iframe (as Yukon has suggested in a post I read somewhere)?

Thanks,

J

    Jodie,

I'm using Catalyst for all my sites and it allows you to create dynamic sidebars and widgets (in addition to a crap-load of other customization options).

I create a different sidebar for each category and only display links to other posts on the same category. Plus I use a plugin called "No Sub-Category Posts in Loop" which removes the excerpts from main categories.

This way, parent categories only show a list of their child categories instead of displaying excerpts from all sub-categories (and here again Catalyst makes me design Category pages however I want - I generally use a nice grid with thumbnails for each sub-category).

And the posts are listed only under the lowest level of categories they belong to (hope this makes sense).

I found that this structure is very user-friendly and Google seems to love it.

    Just my 2 cents

Thanks Berkinb, the Catalyst theme seems very good. I'm just wondering if there is a cheaper alternative as I cannot afford the monthly cost.

    Thanks.

    Jodie,

There wasn't a monthly cost when I purchased it. Hmm, let me check it again.

Edit: Checked to be sure. It's a one time fee mate. I'm sure you can find a discount coupon somewhere to lower the price.

I purchased it for $77 back then, now it seems to be $127. But it's really the only theme I'll ever need.

Yep, I've also used Catalyst theme but the basic one. I've recieved an email from them that they upgraded to one package which is now a one time fee of $127.

So, far I like the theme.

    Thanks guys.

Not sure if you'll be able to help with my next question. Rather than use 'categories' in WP, I read a thread yesterday that it may be better to use a 'page' instead, kinda like a landing page with lots of content and then the links to posts at the bottom. Is there any benefit in doing this? As an example, this would mean a silo structure similar to:

    Index page (page)
    Kettles (page)
    Kettle Reviews (page)
    Kettle review 1 (post)
    Kettle review 2 (post)
    etc...
