EMD affects on Amazon sites

When I built my Amazon sites, I chose a domain which contained the primary keyword I want to rank for. For example if the domain is cordlessdrillreviews.com then I put the keyword Cordless Drill Reviews on the static home page in the H1, H2 and H3 tags.

I’ve heard that to de-optimize a site after the EMD update, you shouldn’t include the same keyword in the H1, H2 and H3 tags which is also in your domain name.

My question is, should the targeted keyword not be included at all in the H1, H2 and H3 tags or should I just add related keywords next to it so it’s less optimized. So based on the above example, what sort of keywords would you put in the header tags on the homepage?

The key to combat over-optimization to a certain extent is to use "related" terms instead of exact match keywords everywhere. You can have your exact match in H2 for instance while having related and natural looking versions in H1 and H3.

    Like:
<h1>What Are the Best Cordless Drill Models on the Market</h1>
<h2>How Our Cordless Drill Reviews and Ratings Work</h2>
<h3>What To Look For in Decent Cordless Drill and Drivers</h3>

    etc.

I see. So was this on page over optimization also a problem before the EMD update and also part of the over optimization which the Penguin algo looks at?

It is mate. The EMD update doesn't punish all EMDs. It (along with the Penguin) punishes a combination of factors including over on-page optimization, low quality content, low quality backlinks, etc.
