Are web 2.0 links good for ranking? Or did they get the axe in the Penguin and beyond algorithm updates?

Please advise and or your opinions welcome.

From traffic perspective it depends on what web 2.0 it is. From SEO perspective it's important what PageRank has that site and if links from that site are dofollow, meaning if they transfer PR.

Well, it looks like the overwhelming response is that they are good for SEO purposes, and you may get some traffic from them if the articles are as good as those on your web site.

Not sure I want to spend a fortune on articles for other peoples web sites. But I got, what I got to do.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Web 2.0 are powerful source of backlink either dofollow or no follow as long as you provide high quality content. Treat your web 2.0 pages as your personal websites or blogs.

Because if you treat them as your personal site, of course you provide a high quality content and value to your audience. If you give them a value then surely one or more of them soon will give link to your web 2.0 site/blog that make them more authority. When they earn google trust the link they will send to your website is juicier than other source of links

If it's too easy to get, avoid it if you want long-term rankings. Looking to rank fast with no care about the future? Go ahead.

Web 2.0 backlinks can be a long term source of quality link and can use as SEO backbone if you do it right.

Well no I don't... I would be more worried if my SEO backbone are article directories and guest posting.

So it can only be done once, by a single person? Why would it be limited to only $1K? If your sig. can generate $1K, why not $2K+?

To answer your question, yes, I could live on $52,000 a year (family of 3). House & cars are payed for.

It still good in rankings if you do it right as Edpudol said. Actually this is one of our link building technique. Build a web 2.0 properties, put a quality content on it and do a tier 2 link building

Web 2.0 on it's own is not of any great benefit for your ranking because it's a PR0 but with some other links pointing to it there will be good improvement.

All pages start out pr-0.. it's not necessarily the pagerank you are going after, it's the high authority and trust factor of the site that's of importance. It would be like having a link from wikipedia.. they're authority is so through the roof that your site would immediately become 'trusted'.. it's no mystery why they went from d/f to n/f

    • Web 2.0 links can increase your rankings and enhance your SEO efforts. However, you need to make sure that those links come from quality web 2.0 sites. When you create web 2.0 pages, add original content and use appropriate anchor text.

As mentioned above by several people, what you need is Quality links.

I suggest Naked links if you have not been doing them already.

Yes web 2.0 sites do work but they need to be used as buffer sites, but those buffer sites need content on them just like your main site. Do not be fooled into thinking you can get away with 300-500 words. You need multiple pages of that amount so Google doesn't ban it or penalize it as useless.

Link wheels still work if you use a buffer system to filter it.

Google cant control that many links and they have no desire to. Just ensure your content is good cuz that's all Google can really nail.

Web 2.0 sites seem to be able to gain rank fairly quick and can stand the barrage of links you send to them. Use them as a buffer to send mass amounts of links to. Tiering several web 2.0 platforms is also working great still today.

Web 2.0's are essential for any serious SEO strategy. You should never exclude any link type from your overall strategy.

You should only exclude bad links regardless of what TYPE of link it is. Viagra, porn, malware, ugg boots everywhere? Try not to link it to your money site.

web 2.0 properties are well as per seo prospective, but totally defend on you how you promote your blog, using unique fresh content with each property, such as well known blog word press, blogger, even most important part of driving more traffic into your business niche, Suppose you submit 100 live links on different web 2.0 properties, instant of you use 1, 2 blog, and promoting on daily base, you will get more traffic only from 2 blogs rather than 100 approved live links, many people published articles with web 2.0 site, and forget the rest of else process, and looking for traffic, once everything planned with your blog and start work rapidly. In natural way as per Google algorithm. These all stuff really helps you pour best traffic for your blog. Good Luck!!

    Thanks

It depends on the quality of your microsite because you can't gather traffic with less content or let's just say not enough information a person is looking for. Quality should be taken in account also for this.

        Exactly.

A mini site / web 2.0 / hub page whatever the heck you want to call it should have the following at least in my opinion.

        • 6,000+ words of content spread out among 7-15 pages.
        • Each page should have a unique title with long tail keywords and content related to its title.
        • OBO links to quality sources along with your personal money site link (again related).
        • Each of those pages should have backlinks directed to them.
        Hope this helps the OP
