Forum posting for traffic a waste of time?

Hi all,

I just wondered what your techniques are in driving traffic to your sites from forum posting. In the past I have used this method and written great forum posts within my site's niche, but after a while when the post drops I get no traffic.

Do many of you see lots of traffic from the same posts, or do you have to keep adding to the forums in question?

Thanks.

You have to keep posting. Many posts, after dropping off the first page, fail to get SEO traffic. If you want forum traffic you need to be in front of forum eyeballs - which means the first page.

The traffic I receive from the forum is both from recent and older posts with the older ones surprising me at times.

That being said, my main reason for posting here isn't to get forum traffic, it's to be a part of the community, help whenever I can, discuss topics I'm interested in and to have some fun with my friends. The forum traffic is merely a nice side benefit.

I agree with Terra. Join a forum for the community and to help.
Then if you get a little traffic great! It's a bonus but don't fixate on trying to get traffic through posting as this will kill your fun. Just let it happen naturally over time, think of it more like long term branding.

I imagine your posting on forums like most IMers do & spreading yourself thin over a lot of forum threads.

Create a forum thread that rocks the niche forum then keep that single forum thread updated like a blog, new info., etc... The reason the single forum thread works better is, the thread will become a source of info. that keeps getting bumped to the top of the niche forum.

Don't spam a forum thread, use the forum thread just like a legit blog, show the traffic info. they want/need without spammy links.

I get around 1k traffic per day from a single forum thread that is years old, evergreen niche subject that will never dry up as long as the forum exist, which the niche forum is about 10 years old (established forum).

      I agree!

If you can keep something going and let it continue to grow, you can get a lot of traffic from it.

The reason for this is because even though 500 people may have seen your post, there are thousands or even millions of people out there that would be interested in your post as well.

I get a lot of traffic from forums, but it's not so much to make money, it's to help build my reputation online as an individual.

I'm not interested in being another statistics, so I like to share my theories and help people all around the world whenever I can.

I'm really big into gaming forums and it's funny because there are times where I'll log into a mutliplayer match on my XBOX 360 and people will literally know my first and last night. It's a good feeling and it's what keeps me going

Forum Posting could get you huge traffic if done correctly. and by saying correctly i mean posting something of great value and in a relevant forum. IMO there are two ways to gain forum traffic.
      1. Posting something gold. post something that people are looking for. you might have seen people who explain basic SEO step by step get lots of thanks. why? because all newbies here need these information. an example of Yukon's recent thread could be a real example.
      http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...e-traffic.html
that wasn't just for newbies but if he had a sig. i'd definitely visit his site.

2.Post something controversial. Yes and i mean it lol. these threads tend to get a lot of attention. especially from those who want to criticize. this'll keep your thread active as people keep on replying to each other. however dont start a "SEO is dead" kind of thread. you'll be raped here.

I wouldn't really rely on it as a source of reliable traffic, but as others here have pointed out writing a killer post and keeping it updated will get more attention and bring more eyeballs to your site, instead of just posting some thin content.

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

Everyone suggests using different sources of traffic, rather than rely on Google. Problem is, the traffic generated from forums, guest posts, signature links etc don't even come close to organic traffic from Google. For me anyway.

Yukon, thanks for the suggestion. 1k visits per day is awesome from one forum! On a separate note, did you get my PM about my silo structure? Sorry to hassle you - any help would be fabulous!

Suprisingly forums are not great to attract traffic to my automotive business. One would think that auto forums would bring traffic to auto sites but not many great forums around and one does not draw much traffic from general purpose forums or forums outside our industry.

I'd say play it smart and find a giant forum in your niche... then find the top contributors in that forum, the ones with authority, and ask them politely if you can rent their signature for a month. All the advantages of massive forum traffic without having to spend so much time posting

Posting any thread in forums will not lead you to the top.You have to post something very useful and informative.Unless the direct traffic which comes from forums will not show up.Some even post controversial threads to get traffic, but it too has some meaning.

    Hi Jodie!

    Nice question!
The KEY -->depends on the quality of your posts.
If you can improve "Authority" on every post then
for readers it might mean a lot. They will start
to be interested to what you can Say or Offer.

    Cheers!

If you are regular on a forum then it is not the waste of time because forums are great source of traffic and you have to post much informative posts that visitors must visit your website. So a website for which you are using your signatures must be relevant to your posts, if not then it can create a chaos about your posts. So do always relevant posts in relevant threads only to get quality traffic from forums.

    Great advice everyone - thanks.

I think the problem is finding relevant forums. For example, let's say your website reviews household products like kettles and microwaves. You're unlikely to find a forum dedicated to just these products and it will be difficult to create an 'excellent' post about these two items. What I find is that I have to search forums where they mention kettles or microwaves and join in the conversation which tends to be a one off. It's not ideal, I know.

High impactful forum blog post will leave traces of backlinks behind.

I still feel that offering high quality content that is helpful to the online users or readers will still bring you a certain amount of backlinks.

However, forum posting should be used as only one of your seo backlink tool. There are other attractive tools like article directories, video, high pr blog comments and etc.

    Hope this helps!

I think getting traffic via forums entirely depends on how relevant your link is to that specific forum and the quality of the content you're linking to so that people will reply and leave positive feedback.

Forums are an excellent way of gaining traffic in my opinion as long as you're not spamming forums with stuff no one will ever read.

There clearly seems to be a love/hate relationship with the whole concept of forum posting.

In my personal, humble opinion, it all boils down to what your niche is, the reputation of the forum you are posting in and most importantly, the value of the content you are posting.

As yukon posted above, the right content in the right place makes all the difference. Had his post been made somewhere else, it may not have provided the awesome results he is continuing to see years later.

My suggestion is to research first where you plan on spending your valuable time

      YouTube+Forum

Post an informative or helpful video on YouTube and post it also on the forum site that you are a member with.

Doing this is a powerful way to increase your YouTube views and at the same time getting additional traffic from the forum site.

There are those forum sites that allow the users to post a video. If you find one, then take advantage of it.

exactly. forum traffic is not a one time thing. i posted something about 6 months ago and i'm still getting the same traffic that i used to get back then. it created a buzz when i posted that thread. even if that thread's gone for a while people keep bringing it back from the dead. i think the value of the information of a thread is the most important thing. however that wasn't an seo forum.

Yea, also if you can post value more than just sharing unneeded responses, you can work less.

People think you can bring success in 5 minutes, when in reality you can.

It could take you 5 minutes to write/record/draw something that could go on to help you succeed for years.

    3. Respond informatively to a new thread especially those who are asking questions.
    4. Give credit to the TS if he/she provided a quality information.

Although leveraging traffic from other sites and forums is what I term "old school" in the SEO scheme of things, it does work however, you have to be careful in creating a sound balance between the content you post on another website vs the content created on your own. Make sure the awesome content is created on YOUR site, after all your post contribution is what helps these high traffic forums rank high in the search engines to begin with!
