The best backlinks are going to be any you can get from authority sites, especially those with a high pagerank. I'd strive to go quality of links over quantity. A small amount of good links will be worth more than a bunch of automated worthless links.

Quality of links is important, but also the diversity of links. If you have 100 links from the same site, it is less powerful than 10 links from 10 different sites (provided they are quality of course).

I agree with matthew... Try other link building too like guest posting and niche link building. But I really do suggest guest posting from different quality blogs with high traffics

Quality back links matter now. Also it is important that the site should have links from different sites instead of lots of links from one site. I was doing the same mistake for one of my site that i was only doing forum posting for a month on a particular forum, and my search rank on Google goes down.

Remind that thousands of page rank 0 or 1 backlinks are less important than several page rank 5+ backlinks. So try to get backlinks from high authority sites as apple, amazon, microsoft google etc.
