Ok IMers, have you ever used your skills for charitable purposes? I've started one for a local community awareness fundraiser and it's interesting to apply IM techniques to get fans and donations. Any tips? differences? Suggestions?

A few times, but not often. I don't go to chamber of commerce meetings or anything like that, so I don't really bump into charities needing web work.

Back when I was in high school, at least 10 years ago, I set up and designed a website for my neighbor who runs a charity in memory of a child she lost to cancer. Nothing fancy, just information and some forms for registration and contact.

The domain is registered in her name and address, yet for some reason, the bill for it comes to my house every year. It's a little virtually unknown registrar these days that still takes payment by mail with a check, $30 a year. I haven't seen that neighbor since high school, but I still pay the bill, unbeknownst to her. She probably has no idea domain registration is a yearly fee.

Anyway, most of my charitable contributions go to the EFF and ACLU. Protecting privacy and individual rights as more and more of everyday life transitions online is important to me, so I support their mission to fight for those things in congress and the courts.
